Do You Change Book Rating After A Re-Read?

This year is the year of re-reads for me. I am currently sat at 33 books read for this year… 12 of those have been re-reads, and I have more re-reads planned in the coming months. One thing I have noticed while re-reading is how much for thoughts and feelings have changed since the first time I have read these books. This has had me wondering, do you change you reviews and ratings after re-reading?

I never used to but after spending a lot of time re-reading this year, I have started changing my ratings on sites like Goodreads and Storygraph, but I don’t change my reviews. I feel like when I first review and rate books, I do it so soon after finishing reading that I am still caught up with my excitement of the ending, and sometimes shock of what has happened. When I am re-reading months, or even years later, I already know what is going to happen in the plot points, so the shock isn’t there. And I feel like due to this I have a different, more rational reaction to the books. Also, if it’s a series and you have read the later books, then knowing what happens in the future can also drastically change your opinions and views.

For example, here are some of the books I have re-read this year and whether I have changed my ratings or not.

  • Glass Houses (Morganville Vampires #1) by Rachel Caine – 5 Stars – Stayed The Same
  • Wicked (Wicked Trilogy #1) by Jennifer L Armentrout – 5 Stars – Stayed The Same
  • Torn (Wicked Trilogy #2) by Jennifer L Armentrout – 5 Stars – Lowered to 4.5 Stars (I just felt upon re-read that I didn’t love it quite as much as the first one).
  • The Mindf*ck Series by ST Abby – 5 Stars – Lowered the rating of the final novella to 4.5 Stars (Upon reflection, I didn’t feel like the epilogue fit with the characters).
  • The Inheritance Games (The Inheritance Games #1) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes – 5 Stars – Stayed The Same
  • The Hawthorne Legacy (The Inheritance Games #2) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes – 5 Stars – Stayed The Same
  • A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR #1) by Sarah J Maas – 5 Stars – Lowered to 4 Stars (Upon reflection there’s quite a bit of this book that is questionable).
  • The Dead Girls Dance (Morganville Vampires #2) by Rachel Caine – 5 Stars – Lowered to 4 Stars (On my re-read, I did feel like this was a bit too much filler).

What do you do? Do you change your ratings or reviews?

I’ve reread the Lux series quite a few times and each time I fall in love more and more with it. I reread Electric Idol and spent half the time crying due to the beauty of it.

I never reviewed The War of the Two Queens. I just gave it a star rating. I seriously don’t know if I can reread it. And it isn’t because of the thrupple. There were so many other things before that and it really left me with a lot of thoughts of this had gone too far. Levels of GRRM.
