The Invisible Life of Addie La Rue meets This is How You Lose The Time War in this fantastical love story that defies death as two souls reincarnate through the centuries.
They’ve loved each other in a thousand lifetimes. They’ve killed each other in every one.
Evelyn remembers all her past lives. She also remembers that in every single one, she’s been murdered before her eighteenth birthday by Arden, a supernatural being whose soul―and survival―is tethered to hers.
The problem is that she’s quite fond of the life she’s in now, and her little sister needs her for bone marrow transplants in order to stay alive. If Evelyn wants to save her sister, she’ll have to:
1. Find the centuries-old devil who hunts her through each life―before they find her first.
2. Figure out why she’s being hunted and finally break their curse.
3. Try not to fall in love.
“How simple and beautiful life could have been. How far from that humanity had strayed.”
Our Infinite Fates was a book that has been on my radar ever since it was announced. I am a huge fan of books involving soulmates and reincarnation. I just absolutely adore this concept and so as soon as I heard about this book, I knew that this would be a story that was right up my street. However, I was a little bit apprehensive as I have read some of Laura’s other books and while I enjoyed them, I can’t say that I loved them. As a bit of a caveat, I should say that I haven’t read any of her fantasy / retellings, just her debut which was a contemporary and I generally am not a huge lover of contemporary novels. I am so, so glad that I gave this book a go, as this entire thing was a masterpiece. I loved every single moment of this book.
Our Infinite Fates follows Evelyn and Arden, two soulmates who are destined to find each other in every life. They have loved each other in every lifetime… but they have also killed each other. And they always do so before Evelyn can turn 18. However, in this lifetime Evelyn has a younger sister with leukaemia and she is preparing to give her bone marrow to try and help save her life. So she must try and stay alive until the surgery, and all the while she is always wondering why Arden must kill her.
This book is poetic. The writing style is just absolutely stunning and gorgeous. I was honestly shocked at this. I am probably sometimes a little bit guilty of judging writing styles from the previous work by the author. As I said, I read Laura’s debut and honestly her writing has developed so much I wouldn’t have guessed it was the same author. Our Infinite Fates has a poetic storyline in there, with one of the lifetimes Arden being someone who writes poetry, and honestly Laura’s writing in this book fits into that exceptionally well. This is honestly one of the most beautifully written books I’ve ever read. Her writing is just lyrical and gorgeous. I couldn’t put it down and found it so easy to just get lost in the writing. I will say that with the writing being lyrical and poetic, there are some terms used that I think will require some researching for younger readers. While this book is promoted as YA, I personally feel that it is wrote in a way that is more catered to an adult audience. There’s nothing inappropriate or anything like that, but the writing just feels a lot more complex and grown up than a typical YA novel.
One thing I adored about this book was the representation. In some life times Evelyn and Arden with male/female pairings, sometimes male/male and sometimes female/female and I loved that. We get to see a snapshot of these past lives, and I really loved that idea that they were soulmates and it truly was about the soul of the person, not what was on the outside or what gender of body they were in. I adored that and I felt like it just made me love this story all the more.
This book has one hell of a twist. While I was thinking about things in the vicinity of what it was, I never guessed what was coming. I remember sitting with my mouth agape going ‘what the FUCK just happened’. I was absolutely shook! It was a fantastic twist and I absolutely loved it. It both thrilled me and broke my heart at the same time. And well, isn’t that the sign of an incredible book.
I honestly cannot put my love and obsession for this book into words. It was absolutely gorgeous in every way shape and form. I read this right at the end of 2024, and I am kicking myself for not reading it a little earlier as it definitely would have been my number one book of the year if I hadn’t already done all my wrap ups. It is stunning and a definite must-read for anyone. It’s been a long time since I loved a standalone book so much. This is one I will read again and again. It has made me very excited to pick up Laura’s debut adult novel coming later this year. If there’s only one book that’s releasing early 2025 you can buy, make sure it is this one. You won’t be disappointed.
“It’s impossible to have bravery without fear. Bravery is picking up the fear and carrying it alongside you, rather than allowing it to block the path.”
