5 Perfect Palette Cleanser Books

As someone who reads a lot of chunky Fantasy books there is nothing I like better than a good palette cleanser book. Something that is short and fun to just give me a break before diving back into a new epic fantasy world. Here are 5 of my favourites that I picked up as a palette cleanser, and ended up absolutely obsessed with them.

Legends and Lattes – Adult Cosy Epic Fantasy

For this one, I really mean both this book and it’s prequel Bookshops and Bonedust. This was probably one of the very first cosy fantasy books that I picked up, and I wasn’t sure whether it would be for me. I am a notorious plot girl, if there’s not a fast paced plot, I often get really bored and DNF. But I don’t know what Travis Baldree put in these books, but I was addicted. I just adore every single moment and it will always be a go to for me when I need a break from high action and just want some cute and cosy vibes.

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches – Adult Urban Fantasy

This was without a doubt my favourite read of 2021, and I still often find myself thinking about it. This one could also come under the cosy fantasy bracket, but this one follows a 30-year-old witch with no family, as she goes to look after three young witches and show them how to use their powers. This had everything I love in a book. Witches, grumpy vs sunshine, found family. It just left me feeling so happy and hopeful about the world. Definitely a must-read.

The Love Hypothesis – Adult Contemporary Romance

Before reading The Love Hypothesis, I hadn’t read a contemporary romance book for years. They just weren’t of any interest to me. But then I picked this one up as a palette cleanser, and read it one sitting. I was absolutely obsessed and I’ve since devoured everything that Ali Hazelwood writes. While they are not the best thing you’ll ever read, and they’re all pretty predictable they are absolutely perfect for that quick break you want in between other genres.

The Cheat Sheet – Adult Contemporary Romance

In a similar vein to The Love Hypothesis, The Cheat Sheet is another contemporary romance that I devoured in a day. This is a fun sports romance, that is friends to lovers with a hint of the fake dating trope. I really enjoyed this one and it made me want to devout all of Sarah Adams’ other works. It’s just a short read that is super fun. I really loved it and will recommend it to everyone as a short palette cleanser read.

The House in the Cerulean Sea – Adult Cosy Fantasy

This one has a very similar storyline to The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches and is just the most amazing, cosy fantasy. I always see people thinking this one is YA, and I really don’t know where that comes from, but our main character is in his 40s or 50s, and is just looking for a new, more enjoyable life and I loved it so much. It left me feeling so positive and that it’s never too late for anything. It was truly fantastic.

I was incredibly surprised when my Horror/Thriller club chose House in the Cerulean Sea for this month. I was like really? You do realize this isn’t scary? Brilliant. Yes. Scary. No.
