Book Vs Adaptation,  Bookish

Book Vs Adaptation: The Flat Share

I’d intended to do one of these posts every month, but as with everything I intend book wise it never ends up happening quite like I expect. I first started this feature back in March when I was discussing the book and adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Ocean At The End of the Lane. If you would like to see my thoughts then you can read that post by clicking HERE.

Today, I am going to be sharing my thoughts on the book and adaptation of The Flat Share by the amazing Beth O’Leary. I am a huge fan of Beth O’Leary and The Flat Share was the first book of hers that I read way back in 2020.

The Book…

The Flat Share is such a cute romance book. Like I said in the introduction to this post, I read this one back in 2020, during Covid lockdown and it honestly made my day reading this back then. It was so adorable and I absolutely loved the whole falling in love via post-it note. It was hilarious and just oh so cute.

I honestly just love everything about this book. The characters are wonderful, and I really enjoyed how Beth wrote Leon’s speech so you could really ‘hear’ his Mancurian accent. It was so cleverly done, and as a fellow Brit I loved it! I also adored how you have the additional storyline outside of the romance going on with Leon’s brother. This whole thing is just fantastic!

The Adaptation…

I have to admit when I first saw the casting for the TV adaptation of The Flat Share I was apprehensive. They just didn’t look anything like I had pictured when reading, but I am happy to say that I have eaten my words… I really, really enjoyed everything about the adaptation. Despite me not picturing the characters as the actors chosen, they did a phenomenal job of capturing these beloved characters. They were truly fantastic.

There was a slight difference in the adaptation to the book, but I thought it was such a brilliant addition. One of the key aspects of the book is Tiffy getting over her previous toxic relationship with Justin. This was still a key aspect of the show but they took it one step further and added his doing some serious ‘love bombing’. I thought this was actually a fantastic addition to the show, as it’s something that happens and is a common feature of toxic relationships and I loved seeing them bring more attention to that! I really loved the adaptation and it is definitely one that I would watch again. Even if you have no interest in reading The Flat Share, I highly recommend giving it a watch.
