Trope Wars: Enemies to Lovers vs Friends to Lovers

Welcome to another instalment of ‘Trope Wars’. I was actually wanting to leave this one until long, long after I’d started Trope Wars as there are two of probably the most popular tropes. However, I’ve been lacking in creativity this month and I just wanted to pick an easy one that I could easily think up examples of… so here we are. For both of these, I tried to think of as many ‘non-contemporary’ books as I could, but one particular trope was difficult to find in fantasy. Let me know which one you prefer in the comments…

Enemies to Lovers

I have a serious love-hate relationship with this trope. Typically as soon as I hear it, I immediately go URGH I HATE enemies to lovers. However, in the last few months I have realised I actually don’t. I hate enemies to lovers in contemporary romance books. Where the main guy (or gal) has no reason behind him being an asshole… he’s just acting like an asshole… I HATE it! However, in fantasy books where they are more enemies because they are from different types of creatures, or warring countries… things like that? I adore!!! (Except The Cruel Prince trilogy because he’s just as ass!) Here are some enemies-to-lovers books that I have loved.

Friends to Lovers

Friends to lovers is actually one of my all time favourite tropes, especially in contemporary and romance books. I just find it so utterly adorable to see friendship start to grow into something more. This one, however, was really difficult to find in any non-contemporary romance books. It is very much a contemporary trope, but I just adore it. Here are some of my favourite friends to lovers books.

Which of these is your favourite?
