Written by #1 New York Times bestselling author V.E. Schwab and torn from the universe of the Shades of Magic sequence, this all-original comic book prequel to A Darker Shade of Magic is perfect for fans of bloody, swashbuckling adventure and gritty fantasy!

Delve into the thrilling, epic tale of the young and arrogant prince Maxim Maresh, long before he became the king of Red London and adoptive father to Kell, the lead of A Darker Shade of Magic!

The youthful Maresh is sent to a violent and unmanageable port city on the Blood Coast of Verose, on strict orders from his father, King Nokil Maresh, to cut his military teeth in this lawless landscape.

There, he encounters an unruly band of soldiers, a lawless landscape, and the intoxicatingly deadly presence of the newly returned pirate queen, Arisa…

I have been a huge VE Schwab fan for so many years. Ever since I picked up Vicious by her, and fell head over heels in love with her work, it has been a challenge of mine to read all of her books. The only one I wasn’t too sure about was the graphic novels of The Steel Prince. Typically, I am not a big fan of comics / graphic novels. However, I picked up the graphic novel by her based on the Vicious series and really enjoyed it, so I thought it was about time to read The Steel Prince graphic novels.

The Steel Prince is set in the same world as A Darker Shade of Magic, which is one of the VE Schwab series that I have read and absolutely loved. This series of comics acts as a prequel to the series. I don’t know if we knew much about the characters in the original series or whether it’s just been so long since I read them that I couldn’t remember, but I didn’t know any of these characters, but enjoyed their story.

Graphic novels are never going to be my favourite medium for reading. I appreciate them for all the fantastic work of not only the author, but also the artist, but I prefer novels. However, I did really enjoy these graphic novels. They were fast paced and action packed and I absolutely flew through all three instalments in the same day. I love VE Schwab and while her novels will always be my favourite, I will read anything she writes! I can’t wait for her next work. If you’re a VE Schwab fan I highly recommend thee graphic novels as some fun and action packed quick reads! I loved being back in this world and it has definitely made me want to re-read the Shades of Magic series.
