Books I Swore I’d Never Read… But Did

Are there any books that you have ever sworn you would never, ever read… but then you were too curious so you did anyway? I know to some this will sound ridiculous… why would you ever swear not to read a book? But for me, sometimes I just have a feeling and know that it’s not going to be for me. But then if a book gets a lot of hype, I will try it anyway just in case.

The first one that I did this with was Fifty Shades of Grey. When the hype was super high, I swore I’d never read it. I knew I wouldn’t like it. But then after friends read and loved it and kept recommending it to me, I decided maybe I should try it. I wish I had listened to my instincts on this one as I absolutely hated this book. I was right… it was definitely not for me and I ended up skim reading the entire thing.

Alternatively, one I swore I’d never read and absolutely adored is the Heartstopper books by Alice Oseman. Now, this one was different from the get go. I have adored all of Alice’s books, but as someone who doesn’t read graphic novels or comics, I swore off Heartstopper as the comic format just didn’t appeal to me. However, after obsessing over the TV adaptation, I decided that regardless of not being a ‘comic person’ I would give them a go anyway… and I absolutely adored every single moment of it.

There’s a few other instances, where I have bought some genres that I’m not usually a lover of to give a go. This year I am trying really hard to broaden my horizons and read books outside of my comfort zone. I am not typically a historical lover, but I have bought all of the Bridgerton books (after loving the show) and I am determined to give them a good go. I am going to try not to ‘swear off’ any books in the future and give everything a chance.

Have you sworn any type of book off before?
