“My heart is a wheel. It breaks all the damn time, but, most days, it just rolls on.”
I originally read The Darkest Minds trilogy around four or five years ago. I decided to read it when I heard it was going to be made into a movie, and I really wanted to read it before I saw the movie. I actually listened to the original trilogy on audiobook, and I loved them. I would say it is one of my all time favourite dystopia novels. I was so excited to see that Zu had her own book, back when this one first published and I couldn’t wait to read it.
Going into The Darkest Legacy I was actually quite apprehensive and torn. I felt like the original trilogy had a pretty perfect ending. It was a happy (at least for now) and hopeful ending. I was really worried that this book would undo that, and I wasn’t sure I wanted that. However, I was too curious not to read this book and so I finally picked it up. I really, really enjoyed this book. It was so wonderful to be back in this post-apocalyptic world and I loved seeing the characters that I already loved, five years down the line.
Now honestly my fear of this book changing the ‘happy’ ending were completely justified… as that’s exactly what it did. We are back in this world, five years on but there’s still so much prejudice against the people who have power. Some of the events happening were reminiscent of history repeating itself, and I was a little heartbroken to see that happen. Having said that however, this book really is fantastic. It is action packed and fast paced and I really couldn’t put it down. I completely flew through this book and it’s quite a chunky book.
Alexandra Bracken is such a phenomenal author, and The Darkest Legacy showed that. Although I was sad about the tense events happening, after the last book left me hopeful that change was coming, I still loved every moment of this book. I devoured every single word as fast as I possibly could and that is testament of Alexandra’s phenomenal storytelling skills. I will forever be a huge fan of hers, and I can’t wait to see what she is going to publish next.
The Darkest Legacy was left slightly open ending, so I am hoping that means that we may get another book in the series at some point. I would absolutely love that and I would end up devouring every word just like I did in this one. This was such a fantastic read… I really loved it, and I highly recommend this series to everyone. It’s a definite must-read for any dystopia fan.
