Duologies, Trilogies or Long Series

What length of series do you prefer? Duologies? Trilogies? Super long series? I think there are pros and cons to each and it’s definitely down to personal preference. Here are my personal thoughts on each of these and some of the series I loved from each category.

Duologies

I love duologies. They are probably my favourite length of series. I never enjoy standalones as much as I am always wishing there was more so duologies are perfect to me. They don’t get drawn out or boring most of the time as everything is kept to just two books. You don’t have ‘middle book syndrome’. I just love duologies. Another thing I love about them is there isn’t a big commitment when picking one up. If your TBR is already huge, two books doesn’t seem THAT bad.

Trilogies

I also love trilogies. These are another one of my favourite series. They’re nice and short so they aren’t a big commitment. For me, my TBR is enormous, and that’s just the books I physically have in my house, so when a new series is releasing if it’s only three books it doesn’t seem like too much for me. A bad thing about trilogies is that sometimes I do feel like they have ‘middle book syndrome’. Where the middle book is kind of boring and not wholly interesting as it is just building everything up for the big blow out in the third book. I have so many favourite trilogies. I do find that trilogies are actually more popular than duologies and so many of my favourite series are trilogies.

Longer Series – 4+ Books

I know a lot of people who absolutely love longer series. You get so much depth and insight into the world, especially if it’s a fantasy series, when it’s longer. You get attached to these characters and get to follow them through all of these adventures. For me personally, I like longer series… if I’ve already started the series. Now, if I discover a series that already has over 5 books released I am less likely to pick it up because it’s a huge commitment. It’s a lot of books to add to my already enormous TBR. I also find with some long series, the story seems to be drawn out. I get a little bored and feel like some of the books are ‘filler’ books. However, I do have a few longer series that I loved.

I like duologies, trilogies, and reasonable longer series. I picked up one series and I think by the end there were 22 books with about 16 different authors. Readers get fatigued at that point.
