From Goodreads:
Mercedes Thompson, aka Mercy, is a talented Volkswagen mechanic living in the Tri-Cities area of Washington. She also happens to be a walker, a magical being with the power to shift into a coyote at will. Mercy’s next-door neighbor is a werewolf. Her former boss is a gremlin. And she’s fixing a bus for a vampire. This is the world of Mercy Thompson, one that looks a lot like ours but is populated by those things that go bump in the night. And Mercy’s connection to those things is about to get her into some serious hot water…
Moon Called is a book that has been on my radar for years. I remember coming across this when I first started reading Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance back in the early 2010s. But for some reason, I just never picked it up. Fast forward a lot of years, and I finally picked this one up as Patricia Briggs was attending RARE in Edinburgh this September. I am so glad that I finally picked this one up.
Moon Called is an urban fantasy book that has almost every paranormal creature you can think of. Mainly focusing on werewolves and shifters, this book also mentions vampires and everything. I really liked this about Moon Called. I find that sometimes in paranormal books they will focus wholly on the main creature and don’t mention others. I always find this very unrealistic as if one creature exists, the chance is that so do many others. I really enjoyed that there were lots of different characters and creatures in this book.
I enjoyed Moon Called. I listened to this one on audio, and I do feel like the narrator did a good job of bringing the characters and the story to life. This book focuses on shifter Mercy Thompson who is a mechanic. I really liked how all of the creatures linked in to real life, and there were elements of the characters just going about their lives. It was a really fun start to a series.
While I enjoyed Moon Called, I’m unsure whether I am going to read the full series. I am very reluctant to start super long series, and this series is so long. However, I enjoyed the first book enough that I am going to read book 2 before I decide whether to commit to the full series or not. If you’re a big fan of paranormal romance / urban fantasy, I definitely recommend this one for you.
