Harper is anxiously awaiting placement into a top oral surgery residency program when she crashes (literally) into Dan. Harper would rather endure a Novocaine-free root canal than face any distractions, even one this adorable.A first-year dental student with a family legacy to contend with, Dan doesn’t have the same passion for pulling teeth that Harper does. Though he finds himself falling for her, he is willing to play by Harper’s rules.
So with the greatest of intentions and the poorest of follow-throughs, the two set out to be “just friends.” But as they get to know each other better, Harper fears that trading fillings for feelings may make her lose control and can’t risk her carefully ordered life coming undone, no matter how drool-worthy Dan is.
Blood, gore, and extra-long roots? No problem. The idea of falling in love? Torture.
A Brush with Love has been on my TBR for a little over a year. I picked this one up when I heard that the main character had anxiety. As an anxiety sufferer myself, I was really curious to read a book with an anxious protagonist. I’m so glad I picked it up as the representation in this book is fantastic. Every anxiety sufferer/experiencer has a different experience but for me, this depicted anxiety so well. So many of it was so accurate to how my anxiety presents itself so I loved being able to see myself in the character. I really loved that about this book.
A Brush with Love follows Harper, an anxious dental surgery student. She is determined and motivated in her studies because science she understands. Human interactions however just stress her out too much. I really associated with Harper. She is such a fantastic character and you see her go through such a journey throughout this book and I loved seeing that. To see her start to open up, be scared off and then learn from that experience. In addition to Harper’s journey, I loved that her love interest, Dan also goes through his own journey throughout this book. I often feel in romance books that the main female goes through their own personal trials and tribulations in addition to the romance, but we don’t see that very often with the male protagonist but Dan goes through his own personal journey and I really loved that.
This is such a fantastic book. It is the start of a series, with the upcoming books focusing on the love lives of Harper’s friends. I’m very much on the fence whether I am going to read those, as honestly my one gripe with this book is that Harper’s friends were the worst. They absolutely did not support Harper no matter what and instead complained about her anxiety and often would push her into situations that would cause her an anxiety attack. Honestly all the way through the book I was like girl… get better friends. So despite my love for this book, I probably won’t be continuing the series.
