5 LGBTQ+ Books Everyone Needs On Their TBR
It’s Pride Month! Happy to Pride to everyone who celebrates. As it is Pride month, I thought I would share 5 books with LGBTQ+ protagonists that I have loved. Years ago, I never would have imagined loving books with LGBTQ+ main characters, as I could never personally identify with the journey of the characters, but after picking a few up, I realised my closed mindedness and that it doesn’t matter what sexuality you are, or what gender you identify as… a good book is a good book and we can all enjoy them. Here’s five of my favourites.
Nick and Charlie by Alice Oseman, is a novella set in the world of Heartstopper. I have quickly become absolutely obsessed with Alice’s books, and every single one of them has LGBTQ+ characters, both side characters and the main protagonists. I have loved them all, but Nick and Charlie is definitely my favourite, as it’s just so adorable and cute. It’s a super positive and optimistic novella. My spoiler free review of Nick and Charlie will be posted in the next week or so.
The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune is another favourite of mine because of its absolute adorable and optimistic tale. Reading this book is just like receiving a big warm hug. I absolutely adored it. You can read my spoiler free review of this book by clicking HERE.
Malice by Heather Walter is a Sleeping Beauty retelling where a Maleficent kind of character (she’s not the typical Maleficent we know) and Aurora are each others true love. I didn’t know how I would feel about this book, but it was one of the best retellings I have ever read! I adored it! Read my spoiler free review of Malice by clicking HERE.
The Art of Being Normal by Lisa Williamson was the first LGBTQ+ book I ever read and it still remains one of my all time favourites. I love it so much, and it is a heartfelt look into a transgender teen. It’s such a fantastic read. You can read my spoiler free review of this book by clicking HERE.
I may be slightly cheating with this one as the main characters of The City of Brass by SA Chakraborty are not LGBTQ+… however, two of the bigger side characters are and I just love their story so much. Muthandir is to be king and so his homosexual love is forbidden, and I loved seeing how they could still work everything out. Plus, this one is just one of the best fantasy series of all time, and I will add it to as many lists as I possibly can. You can check out my spoiler free review of this book by clicking HERE.
While composing this list, I realised I really haven’t read all that many books with LGBTQ+ main characters, so if you have any recommendations for ones you think I will like please comment and let me know. I especially love fantasy!
