When Sophie receives a parcel from her best friend, Freya, she expects it to contain the reason why Freya left town so suddenly, without goodbyes and without explanation. Instead, she finds a letter addressed to Win, a girl Freya barely knew – or did she? As more letters arrive for more people on the periphery of Freya’s life, Sophie and Win begin to piece together who Freya was and why she left. Sometimes it’s not about who’s gone, but about who they leave behindPerfect for fans of Beautiful Broken Things and The Sun Is Also a Star.
I’ve been such a huge fan of Non Pratt’s fantastic work since I read her debut novel, Trouble, years ago. Since then I have devoured and loved all of her work. I was really looking forward to diving in to her newest work. I love how gritty, raw and real her books always feel and this one was no different. I really enjoyed every moment of Every Piece Of My Heart.
As I have very limited time reading lately, I decided to get the audio edition of this book. I did really enjoy the narrations of the characters, however I did find it a little bit hard to decipher who was talking in the first third of the book. Every Little Piece Of My Heart is told from the perspectives of at least four characters, and sometimes I had to really look at my app to figure out who was talking. As we got further into the book this became much easier, but I have to admit it did affect my enjoyment of the first part of the book. After I got to grips with this though, I quickly fell in love with this amazing book.
Every Little Piece Of My Heart has the teen authenticity that you come to expect from a Non Pratt book. One thing I adore about her is that it really feels like a teenager is talking. I find with some teen contemporary books you can really tell that it’s been written by an adult, and it doesn’t feel real for that age group. I did not feel like this with this book. I really felt like these were real teenagers that were talking. In all their faults and childish whims, it was completely authentic.
Every Little Piece Of My Heart is a very emotive and sad story. It follows some teens coming to grips with their friend just disappearing and I really enjoyed the mystery aspect of this story. I was constantly asking what happened to her? Where did she go? It was a really emotional journey for everyone involved and I really enjoyed that journey.
This was a really quick and fantastic read. As expected, I really loved this story. The audio narration at the start did affect my enjoyment slightly, so I have knocked a star off the rating because of that but this one is a definite must-read for any YA Contemporary fan. It was brilliant, and I can’t wait to read more from Non in the future.
