Broke, almost homeless, and recently fired. Those are my official reasons for answering a wanted ad for a skeevy-looking bartender gig.It went downhill the moment they asked me to do a trial shift instead of an interview – to see if I’d mesh with their “special” clientele. I think that part went great. Their customers were complete dickheads, and I was an asshole right back. That’s the definition of fitting in, right?
I expected to get thrown out on my ass. Instead, they…offered me the job?
It turns out this place isn’t a bar. It’s a guild. And the three cocky guys I drenched with a margarita during my trial? Yeah, they were mages. Either I’m exactly the kind of takes-no-sh*t bartender this guild needs, or there’s a good reason no one else wants to work here.
So what’s a broke girl to do? Take the job, of course – with a pay raise.
The Guild Codex isn’t really a series that has been on my radar for very long. I’d actually never heard of it until the very beginning of the year, when I asked friends to recommend some books for a challenge in 2022, and one of my best book friends recommended this one. As I typically only read physical books and audiobooks, and I didn’t own this one physically, I decided to try this one on audiobook. I am so glad that I did, as I ended up really loving the narration of this book.
Three Mages and a Margarita is just as fun as it sounds. It’s not a book to be taken too seriously. If you’re looking for a super serious book that is going to make you think really hard… this book is not going to cut it for you. But for me… who loves a good funny, lighthearted book; this book was actually pretty perfect for me. It is just what I needed to read after finishing some pretty hefty epic fantasy books in the past few weeks. I immediately was drawn into this world where there is a ‘guild’ of magical beings that humans know nothing about. It was fun… and honestly everything I have ever dreamed of. What fantasy fan hasn’t wished that one day, they’d stumble into a magical world? I know I wish that would happen to me!
This was the first book by Annette Marie that I have read, and I will definitely be checking out more of her work. Her writing style was so lovely and easy to follow, which for me is exactly what I need in an audiobook. As I listen to books while on my commute to and from work, sometimes I am super tired and listening to complex books… sometimes I get lost. So this one was absolutely perfect. It was funny, lighthearted with a bit of shock and mystery interwoven in. I really, really enjoyed it.
This was a fantastic first instalment in the series, and I will definitely be checking out the next book in the series. I’m looking forward to diving back into this incredible world of magic, mystery with a dash of romance. It’s a perfect palate cleanser after reading some heavy or complex books and I will forever be recommending it for people suffering from a reading slump. It really was fantastic!
