Return to the world of The Bridge Kingdom in this sensuous fantasy full of romance and intrigue that is perfect for fans of From Blood and Ash and A Court of Silver Flames.A soldier raised as heir to an empire, Zarrah is motivated by two truths. The first is that the Veliant family murdered her mother. And the second is that her pursuit of vengeance will put every last one of them in their graves.
The Endless War between Maridrina and Valcotta has raged for generations, leaving thousands of Zarrah’s people dead and countless more orphaned. So when she’s given command of the contested city of Nerastis, Zarrah is prepared to do whatever it takes to destroy the Maridrinian forces who oppose her. And to kill the Veliant prince who leads them.
Yet a chance encounter with an anonymous, and handsome, Maridrinian causes Zarrah to question whether the violence she’s perpetrated is justice or a crime. And as she continues to meet the nameless man each night, she finds common ground – and fiery passion – in his arms.
But when identities are revealed, Zarrah must decide whether to embrace a chance at peace…or march to the drums of war.
As soon as I finished reading The Traitor Queen, I dove straight into the audiobook of The Inadequate Heir. This is in no way a favourite series but I do find them super fun and enjoyable. I couldn’t wait to get inside the heads of some of the different characters and I was really looking forward to this one. I was not disappointed. I have to say that this book is probably my favourite of the series to date.
The Inadequate Heir follows Zarrah and Kerris, two characters that we were briefly introduced to in the previous books. I have to say, I much prefer Zarrah and Kerris as main characters than Arren and Lara. I enjoyed both of their perspectives so much more, and I am so glad that Danielle decided to write their story.
While I completely understand why this book takes place concurrently with The Traitor Queen, a part of me was a little sad that it did. While I really enjoyed seeing the events from the previous book from others’ perspectives, a part of me really wanted to see things after the end of the war. I was really looking forward to seeing what this world looks like post-The Traitor Queen, and I’m a little sad that we barely saw any of that. However, it is keeping my hopes up for the next book. I can’t wait to see how everything plays out now that the war is over.
I really enjoyed The Inadequate Heir. Like the previous two books it was fun and enjoyable. I do feel like this one followed current trends of upping up the spicy scenes, which I am sure most people will love. For me, I didn’t. I’m not a ‘spice’ lover personally and so I felt like this book was way, way longer than it actually needed to be. However, I did really enjoy it. The ending has left me reeling and I can’t wait to read the next book and see how things play out for Zarrah and Kerris.
