On his own.Thomas Bellweather hasn’t been in town long. Just long enough for his newlywed mother to be murdered, and for his new stepdad’s cop colleagues to decide Thomas is the primary suspect.
Not that there’s any evidence. But before Thomas got to Garretts Mill there had just been one other murder in twenty years.
The only person who believes him is Charlotte Rooker, little sister to three cops and, with her soft hands and sweet curves, straight-up dangerous to Thomas. Her best friend was the other murder vic. And she’d like a couple answers.
Answers that could get them both killed, and reveal a truth Thomas would die to keep hidden…
I have been such a huge fan of Brigid Kemmerer’s for a long time. I first read her Elementals series back when it first published and fell head over heels in love with her writing. Since then, I have read almost everything she brought out… everything except Thicker Than Water. So, I decided it was finally time for me to tick this one off the TBR and finally read it. I wish I could say I loved this one quite as much as I did her other books, but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. Don’t get me wrong, it was good… I just feel like it wasn’t as good as her other books.
Thicker Than Water follows the story of Thomas. Thomas’ mother has just been murdered… and he is the number one suspect. Thomas knows he didn’t do it… he could never harm his mother. But the entire town are against him. Can he find out who did it… when the entire town are out to get him?
I love a YA thriller. It’s one of my favourite genres and I am always trying to figure out who the culprit is. And I was no different in this one. I was really excited to find that this one was a thriller/mystery, as I adore those kinds of books. The first half of this book was fantastic. It set the mystery and the scene up wonderfully and I was guessing everyone. Then I got to the half way point and I just don’t know what happened. The second half was like what I imagine being on drugs feels like. I was so confused. I didn’t know what the hell was going on and every page I read the feeling of WTF just got worse.
Even after finishing the book, I’m left wondering what the heck did I just read? I’m confused. I am just in two minds about this one. It felt like two completely different stories, that just aren’t cohesive. In the second half you get a paranormal element introduced, and to me it just felt disjointed and like it didn’t belong. I was just so very confused.
Thicker Than Water is an interesting and solid read. I did enjoy it, and I am glad that I finally picked this one up, but it was just so very weird. If you like weird things that don’t necessarily make a whole lot of sense then you will probably love this one. But for me, with my methodical and logical brain I just couldn’t get away with this one. I’m glad I read it, but I won’t be re-reading this one in a hurry.
