5 Books That Gripped Me From The Start

Books that grip you right from the start are my favourite kind of books. As I sit and write this, I am in the worst book slump, where nothing is really gripping me, so I’m really missing this feeling right now. Here are five books that I have read over the last decade that gripped me right from the start. Some of them are recent releases and some are some super old releases… but each of them are definitely worth reading.

Wither by Lauren DeStefano was one of the first dystopia novels I read way back when they were all the rage after the popularity of The Hunger Games. With our main character being seperated from her family and bought to be a sister-wife to a handsome and rich man, I couldn’t put it down. I was so invested right from the start, dying to know if she would escape and find her way back home.

With a first line of “There’s a demon in McDonalds.” I was immediately laughing and loving White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L Armentrout. It’s such a fun YA Paranormal series that I read way back in 2013, and it’s still one of my faves. I absolutely adore this series and recommend it to everyone. Besides it’s where we meet my favourite fictional boy of all time… no sorry Roth… I am obviously talking about my baby Zayne!!

Lucy in the Sky by Paige Toon was a book I happened upon by accident back when I was a teenager and it’s still one of my favourite books of all time. Starting with our main character on a plane to Australia and she gets a text message from her boyfriends phone… from the girl he just cheated on her with. Immediately I was invested and couldn’t put this down. I re-read this one at least once every couple of years.

Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer is a more recent release. Set in a fantasy world where a deadly virus is sweeping through the land I was gripped right from the start. Following our main character who is an outlaw living a dangerous life to bring medicine to the poor… I adored every single moment of this book.

And finally, A Sky Painted Gold by Laura Wood is a book that I wouldn’t usually pick up, but this is a gorgeous YA historical novel set in the glitz and glamour of a gatsby-era England. I just loved everything about this novel. It’s so different to what I usually read but I adored it!
