Morally Grey Characters I Adore

Now be honest… we all love a morally grey character. Even me, who usually falls head over heels in love with the good guy over the bad boy every time, loves a morally grey character. There’s just something about them. The fact that they are willing to do bad stuff to protect the world, or the one they love… it appeals to us all. Here are five morally grey characters that I adore.

Victor from the Villains series by VE Schwab
When I first thought about doing this post Victor was the first character that popped into my head. He is the epitome of morally grey. He is, in fact, a villain. He does bad stuff… but he does them for a reason and I love that and I love him. He does all he can to save Sydney… the little girl who Eli tried his hardest to dispose of. Those glimpses of good make you question what actually is a villain?

Casteel from the Blood and Ash series by Jennifer L Armentrout
I know, I know… he’s the hero of the entire series. And you’re right, he is. But he is also quite morally grey. He will do absolutely anything for the ones he loves. First, he was all set to kidnap and trade Poppy to save his brother. Now… he would destroy the world to save Poppy. He would harm others for the ones he loves and that, to me, makes him morally grey. I mean… he did rip someone’s heart from his chest!

Kiaran from The Falconer series by Elizabeth May
Ahhhh Kiaran. Kiaran is a mysterious fae who is good because he won’t harm humans like the other fae. However, he is training our lead character to help her kill more of his kind. He is vicious and beautiful! And definitely in the morally grey area… yet I am head over heels in love with him.

Finn from These Hollow Vows by Lexi Ryan
This one will be very difficult to discuss as this book isn’t actually released yet… it’s out in July. Don’t forget to preorder it. Finn is the Shadow Prince, the true heir to the Unseelie Throne. And he will do anything to get it back and to help and save his people. He is good to the soul because he wants to help his people… but if that means he has to kill and betray people to make that happen… he will. Even if he mourns them and it affects him afterwards. I adore Finn. He is just so amazing. He’s my new book boyfriend for sure!

AIDEN from The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
And now here comes the love of my life… the murderous AI system that I just can’t help but love. He is psychotic and doesn’t think twice about cutting off the air supply to whole parts of the ship and killing thousands… because he kills 2000 to save 20,000 and those odds made it all okay… right? AIDEN, although not human would do anything to save Kady and I love him so much! He is the epitome of morally grey.

The Hound from A Song of Ice and Fire!!!
He has his loyalties in the wrong place at the start, but he becomes one of my favourite literary and TV antiheroes.

I agree that Casteel is morally grey. While the hero, he won’t hesitate to rip out available heart, behead, or otherwise kill for the love of Poppy.

I am, of course, Team Seth. And he is extremely dark grey in Covenant and through most of Titan. Mostly because he is incapable of love until he really falls in love with Josie.
