Fairytales I’d Love A Retelling Of
I am such a sucker for retellings. I don’t even care what they’re about: fairytales, myths, historical events. I love them all. I adore digging into a new retelling and seeing what authors have done to the story. There are some retellings that are ridiculously popular: Beauty and the Beast for one is a fairytale that you can find a million retellings of. Peter Pan is another. But there are a few other fairytales that I think are much less popular. Here are a few that I would love to see some more retellings of.
Rumplestiltskin
Now, I know there are a few out there but honestly they are few and far between. I have a lot of retellings on my shelf and I only have one that is a retelling of Rumplestiltskin. This was one of my all time favourite fairytales when I was young… even if I could never pronounce his name until I was at least 10 (LOLZ)! … and I’m actually super sad that there’s not more retellings of this one out there. I have just picked up Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik and I am really looking forward to reading it.
The Little Mermaid
I am a big fan of books set in the sea and that are about mermaids. I just love it. It probably stems from my childhood obsession with mermaid movies and wanting to be a mermaid. The Little Mermaid was one of my all time favourite Disney movies and I love that the original tale is so much darker. I would love a retelling of The Little Mermaid. While coming up with this list I realised I am not actually aware of a single one. If you know of any please leave me a comment and let me know. I’d love a Little Mermaid retelling.
Sleeping Beauty
Another one that was one of my favourite Disney movies as a kid. I absolutely loved it and this is another one that you don’t really see in the retelling books. Maybe it’s because the protagonist spends half the movie unconscious? But I’d still love to see a new take on it. I have just received Malice by Heather Walter for my birthday which is a Maleficent/Sleeping Beauty retelling with a romance between the two of them. I cannot wait to start that one.
Twelve Dancing Princesses
This one is probably not as well known as the other fairytales but I would love to see more retellings of the Twelve Dancing Princesses tale. I used to love this one when I was younger and while I do have one retelling of this on my shelf, Entwined by Heather Dixon, I’m not aware of any other retellings of this one other than this one. I’d love to see more. Who doesn’t love a story with princesses?
Robin Hood
Robin Hood is one that I have actually seen a few retellings of this one, but I really think there should be more. I absolutely love the Robin Hood tale and Scarlet by AC Gaughen is my all time favourite Robin Hood retelling. I do have another retelling of this one on my shelf, so I do think this is probably the most popular of the ones on my list… but compared to other tales, it’s still not done very much.
What fairytales/stories would you like to see retellings of?

Twisted: The Girl Who Uncovered Rumpelstiltskin’s Name was a really good retelling
There are actually quite a few Little Mermaid ones https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/41399.The_Little_Mermaid_Retellings from that list I read but didn’t love Sea Witch and am looking really forward to reading Kitsune and To Kill a Kingdom
I dont know of any Sleeping Beauty ones but you’ll have to tell me how Malice is
Entwined is one I want to read too, looks so good.
I still need to read Scarlet. I also really want to read Sherwood by Meagan Spooner. A Robin hood one I got as a freebie that I am curious to read is https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/41952174-olde-robin-hood
I also love retellings as you know. I’m partial to a good Peter Pan, Alice and Wonderland or Beauty and the Beast retelling but there are quite a few of those out there already.
What I’d love to see more of are retellings from other perspectives like Stepsister by Jennifer Donnelly and the story of the Ugly Stepsister. Id also like more The Wild Swans retellings

If you’ve never read Slay and Rescue, I think you’d love it. It’s a humorous look at the fairytale and the job of Charming who heads to Slay these dragon and rescue the princess.
