Top 10 of 2020: Breakthrough Authors of 2020

Hey Guys,
Today I’m here to talk about my breakthrough authors of 2020. Now, I always call this one my breakthrough authors as these will not necessarily be new or debut authors. It could be someone who has been published for years but there are all authors that I discovered and/or read for the first time this year.
- 10. April Lindner, author of Jane
- This year I picked up Jane, a retelling of Jane Eyre that had been on my bookshelf for so many years, I can’t even remember when I bought this one. I was so glad I did, I loved it and it really made me want to try the original classic. I will definitely pick more up from April in the future.

- 9. Erin Morgernstern, author of The Starless Sea
- I’ve had Erin Morgernstern’s work sat on my shelf for ages with her debut, The Night Circus. I still actually haven’t read that one but I did read her 2020 release The Starless Sea. Her writing style is so lyrical and beautiful and I will definitely be picking up her other works soon.

- Jess Rothenberg is another one that I have had on my shelf for a while but it was The Kingdom, a sci-fi Disneyland type story that drew my interest this year, It was strange and awesome. I loved it. I am secretly hoping she decides to write a sequel.

- 7. Dana L Davis, author of Romeo and Jewel
- Dana is a new author for me, in that I had never heard of her before this year. I know she has published some books prior to this year but as I am not big on contemporary, I’d never heard of them. But then I got an ARC of her new 2021 upcoming novel, Roman and Jewel and I fell in love with her. Roman and Jewel was the perfect book for me, Romeo and Juliet on broadway… erm…. yes please!

- 6. Holly Race, author of Midnight Twins
- Holly Race is the first on this list whose debut was actually in 2020. She published the amazing YA Fantasy Midnight Twins this year and I was lucky enough to get an ARC. I loved it, it was such an incredibly story and I’m dying to get my hands on book 2. I can’t wait to see what she writes next.

- 5. KA Linde, author of House of Dragons
- I’ve been friends online with KA Linde for such a long time and had embarrassingly never picked up one of her books…. that is until she wrote one about dragons and I just had to read it. It was amazing and now I am working my way through her back catalogue. I am in love with her writing and can’t wait to read more.

- 4. Nadine Brandes, author of Fawkes
- Fawkes had been on my radar for a while and I finally read it in 2020 and loved it. This was the first historical fantasy that I read and I am a huge fan. I loved the fantasy elements set around a real historical event. I already have Nadine’s Romanov on my bookshelf waiting and I can’t wait to get to it.

- 3. Amelie Wen Zhao, author of Blood Heir
- Blood Heir is a book that had I not received it in an Illumicrate I probably wouldn’t have picked up. I am so glad I did. I fell head over heels in love with Amelie’s writing style, her characterisations and her fantastical world building. I am officially an Amelia fangirl and I can’t wait for book 2 to release in early 2021.

- 2. Beth O’Leary, author of The Flat Share
- I am not usually a fan of contemporary and romance books. I’m a fantasy fan through and through, but after a reader on Goodreads suggested that I read The Flat Share, and after seeing it all over bookstagram, I decided to finally read it. I loved every single second of it. I couldn’t get over Beth’s amazing storytelling and I couldn’t put this one down. I have already bought and pre-ordered Beth’s other works and I can’t wait to dig in.
- My review of The Flat Share will be coming in the new year as I have only recently read this on in December.
- 1. Hannah McBride, author of Sanctum
- I don’t this is any surprise to anyone at all who has been following me this year. I got an ARC of Hannah’s debut novel, Sanctum, after one of my best bookish friends Vonetta, asked me if I’d sign up for the release day blitz. I fell head over heels in love with this book and have already devoured the sequel. Hannah is officially one of my favourite authors of all time, and I’m Jennifer L Armentrout level obsessed with her. And anyone who has followed me for any amount of time will know is a huge deal! I loved it so much and I can’t wait to read everything else she writes in the future.
