Favourite Reads: Top 5 Paranormal Romance

Something I get asked a lot is for recommendations and what my favourite books are. For any book lover this is an impossible question. I started this blog almost 10 years ago now, so I have reviewed so many books over the last decade. In a bid to bring some recognition to some older series and some less talked about books, I am starting a new series of posts that will last a couple of weeks. I am going through all of my read and reviewed books and choosing five of my favourite books from each of the main genres that I read.

Now, I am purposefully leaving out a particular author from these lists. That’s my favourite author in the world, Jennifer L Armentrout. If you’re a new follower here you can find a million posts highlighting Jen’s books on this blog archive. She’s my favourite, so naturally when talking about my favourite books she’s the first person I mention. I want this series of posts to highlight some books you may not have heard me talk about and I’m hoping you may discover some new titles that you may want to read.

I’m starting it off with one of the genres I read the most. Paranormal Romance. This genre is actually really close to my heart as my very first YA book I read was Paranormal. Anyone who knows me well will know that YA is my favourite kind of read, so that’s why Paranormal is super important to me. So… here we are. My top 5 recommendations for Paranormal Romance.

~ K-Books Top 5 Paranormal Romance Reads ~

1. Glass Houses, Book 1 in the Morganville Vampires Series by Rachel Caine

I read Glass Houses back in 2011, right in the middle of the Twilight era. Vampire romances were massively popular at the time and I fell head over heels in love with this series because it was different to other vampire books at the time. It wasn’t really a vampire romance. The vampires in this series are evil. Claire, the main character, moves to a town that happens to be run by vampires and I loved that it wasn’t a romanticised series. The vampires were actually the villains. I absolutely love this series. It’s a super long series, with 15 books. I don’t usually like long series but I make the exception for this one as it is just so good.

2. Touch of Frost, Book 1 in the Mythos Academy Series by Jennifer Estep

I am an absolutely enormous lover of anything greek mythology. The Mythos Academy series is one of my absolute favourites. It’s a YA series filled to the brim with Greek mythology. The main character goes to a school where all of the teachers are Greek Gods. I absolutely loved how the author entwined the myths into this series and it was filled with action, intrigue and romance. Everything I love about YA was included in this series.

3. Angel, Book 1 in the Angel Trilogy by LA Weatherly

I can’t even tell you how much I adore everything about this series. Angel, or Angel Burn in the US, is such a unique angel series. The vast majority of angel series have a romance between a human and an angel. Angel was totally different. Instead the angels were evil and wanting control over humanity and Earth. A half-angel teams up with an angel killer to save the world from them. I love this series so much and it is filled to the brim with epic romance and incredible action. This one is a must-read for any paranormal lovers.

4. Storm, Book 1 in the Elementals Series by Brigid Kemmerer

Brigid Kemmerer has been one of my favourite authors for years. She has recently found a lot of new readers and new found popularity with her YA Fantasy series, A Curse So Dark and Lonely. However, her paranormal romance series, Elementals, is my absolute favourite. It follows a group of brothers who can control an element each. The series is most definitely romance. Each brother gets his own book and his own romance but throughout all of them they have to band together to protect each other from the people who are after the Merrick brothers. If you want an epic paranormal series that’s heavy on the romance this is definitely one that you should check out.

5. Balance, Book 1 of the Balance Series by Janelle Stalder

I don’t actually read a whole lot of self-published books. This is actually the only self-published book on this list. But it deserves it because it is absolutely amazing. Balance is an angel romance and the series is filled with romance, intrigue and action. Books 1 and 2 follow Vivian and Caleb’s love story and all the obstacles they have to fight and overcome to be together. Books 3, 4 and 5 switches protagonists but Vivian and Caleb are definitely still included in the story. One thing I love about this series is it can be read as separate series, Vivian and Caleb’s duology; Hope’s trilogy. They all just link together in this bigger world.

~ Special Mention ~

Now I’m going to totally cheat here and include a special mention. This special mention isn’t actually released yet but it’s a New Adult self-published Paranormal Romance and I am quite obsessed with this book right now. Like I said above, I don’t actually read a lot of self-published books but this was one I got an ARC from as a good friend of mine is friends with the author. This is possibly one of my favourite reads of the year so it needed a special mention…

Sanctum is the first book in the Blackwater Pack series. It’s a gorgeously written shifter book involving wolf shifters. It was so addictive. It is for more mature readers and does tackle issues like sexual abuse so it can be triggering. However, how Hannah handles these issues is superb. She really explores how her characters recover and grow. It has the most heart warming romance I have ever had the pleasure of reading, so this one is most definitely a must-read.

Sanctum will release August 21, 2020.
