Six authors.
One private island.
Seventy-two hours to write the ending that will change their lives.
Named one of the Most Anticipated Mysteries of 2026 by GoodReads, Marie Claire, and Page Six.
“In the running for the best mystery of 2026. With a trove of tropes that mystery lovers will love, it will remind you, in the best way, of Agatha Christie.”—Stephen King
Arthur Fletch, one of the world’s bestselling novelists, is a reclusive genius known for his iconic protagonists and fiendish twists. When six struggling authors are invited to spend a weekend on his private Scottish island, they arrive to discover a shocking secret: Arthur Fletch is dead . . . and his last book is unfinished.
Desperate to publish the novel, Fletch’s agent and editor have summoned these writers in the hope that one of them will imagine a worthy ending for this final book. To sweeten the deal, they are offering an irresistible prize: in addition to ghost-writing the last chapter––for a mind-boggling sum––they will also help the lucky writer successfully re-launch their own career, guaranteeing future bestsellers. The catch: the writers have just seventy-two hours to finish Fletch’s magnum opus.
It’s the perfect plot. All it needs is a killer ending.
I have to start this review by saying I’m not really much of a Crime reader. I do enjoy the occasional YA thriller, but other than that Crime has always been a genre that I’ve avoided. I had misguided views of crime just being a ‘boring’ genre and just overall not for me. However, The Ending Writes Itself really intrigued me with its premise of a locked room mystery with authors on a deadline to write. I thought this was such a unique and interesting concept. Add to that the fact that one of the authors that makes up Evelyn Clarke is VE Schwab, one of my all time favourite authors, I just knew I had to give this a go. I am now ready to eat my words about the crime genre, as this book was absolutely fantastic!
Before picking this book up, I’ve been reading some very ‘meh’ books and have been finding that I was constantly checking how many pages till the end of the chapter / end of the book. That habit was broken immediately with The Ending Writes Itself. Right from the start the writing absolutely sucked me in. I was fascinated by all of these characters, and how they would go about writing the ending of this book. I just honestly couldn’t put it down. It had me psychoanalysing every character and trying to guess who the ‘dodgy’ character was from the very beginning.
One thing I loved about this book was that the authors selected for this competition were all authors of different genres. It really showcases the prejudice that some genre authors go through. There was a lot of looking down on the YA and Romance authors and I really loved the way Evelyn Clarke showed that this prejudice happens with publishing and some authors. That this is something that a lot of authors do in fact go through. Yes, this book is a murder mystery but I think what makes it so unputdownable is the realistic portrayal of writing and publishing that is thread throughout the whole thing. It just makes this book a fantastic read.
Evelyn Clarke knows how to write a murder mystery! I had so many theories of ‘who dunnit’ throughout the whole book. Some I discredited really early as ‘too obvious’ that later had me considering them again. There are so many fantastic red herrings throughout this book and I had a million different theories at one point. That to me is a fantastic mystery. I did end up guessing who it was… like 3 pages before it was revealed. I love that it kept me guessing right till the very end.
This book was fantastic! It has definitely shown me that my dismissal of the crime genre in the past is completely unfounded. And I will definitely be picking more of this genre up in the future. The Ending Writes Itself was an addictive and exciting journey that I couldn’t put down from start to finish! I loved every single moment of it, and I cannot recommend it enough. Even if you think this genre is not for you, I urge you to give this book a go! It truly is just THAT good!
“I’ve never understood the hostility between genres. They have more in common than what separates them. Fantasy. Horror. Thriller. Crime. They’re all just different models, varying backdrops for the characters and the conflict, constructs for the dear and the need and the suspense.”
