Bestselling author Katherine Webber pens a highly-anticipated and swoonful new spin-off to the Sunday Times bestselling YA romantic fantasy series, Twin Crowns.
Bursting with epic adventure, romance and humour on the high seas. Someone is making waves …
Captain Marino Pegasi.
Wedded to the sea.
Immune to love.
Until now …
Captain Marino Pegasi is never happier than when he’s exploring the oceans. But when his beloved sister, Celeste, falls gravely ill, he is forced to go on a desperate search for a cure. Little does he know that in his search he will find so much more lying beyond the horizon. Does Marino’s fate truly lie in the hands of a bewitching, mysterious mermaid …?
As soon as I finished the third book in the Twin Crowns series, I couldn’t wait to dive into the next book. I was excited to see what was going to happen with a book that doesn’t have Rose and Wren at the forefront. I was also super excited to go on a sea voyage with Marino as I am partial to a ‘pirate’ story. I have to admit that this book was not my favourite in the series. While I did really enjoy it, I felt like it had lost a little bit of the magic that the original trilogy had.
I was listening to this one on audio, and while for the most part I loved the narrator, his voice for Shen was just not it. I remember just being pulled out of the story and laughing at it a little bit, as it was just so drastically different to the original narrators of the previous books. However, luckily Shen is not in the book very much, so after the first few chapters it wasn’t an issue. Other than that, I really enjoyed the narration for both characters and I really recommend this entire series on audio.
Captain of Fates is such a fun and great read. I loved so much of this story. I loved the sea voyage element, and the fact that we have some very complex mer-people. I just loved all of these elements so much. Having said that, I did struggle to get into this one as easily as I did the first three books. I do think that was completely my fault, rather than it being an issue with the book. I started Captain of Fates and then due to personal issues, I ended up having a 3-4 week break 10% in and then going back into it. In retrospect, I should have just restarted from the start but I didn’t, and I ended up being confused, not remembering what I was supposed to know or not. Due to this, I felt like I didn’t connect to it quite as much as I would have had I not had the break inbetween.
Captain of Fates was cute, fun and just an overall joy to read. I really love this world and it was really great to be able to see some new places and faces in this one. I did really enjoy Marino’s journey, and I would definitely recommend this series. I’ll be diving straight into the final book in the series, King of Beasts, and I absolutely cannot wait.
