Sigrid has dreamed of owning an inn for years, and she’s spent the past eighteen months getting the place ready in time for Yule. But when the big day finally arrives, a heavy snowfall blocks all the roads and traps her and her very first guest—a mysterious, handsome elven traveler—inside for twelve days.
Last year I fell in love with cosy fantasy, and throughout 2025 I have been searching for more and more of this genre. One of the first cosy fantasy series I fell in love with was the Falling for Fables series by Jenna Wolfhart. I adore each and every book in that series and so when I opened up her newsletter last week to find a Christmas-themed short story set in the Falling for Fables world, I immediately abandoned my current read to dive into it… and it was delightful!
Merry in Magic follows Sigrid, an inn owner who is determined to make it work, despite the fact her inn is quite literally in the middle of nowhere. When a handsome elf becomes her first customer, sparks fly. But Sigrid is determined to keep professional! But when they find themselves snowed in alone for 12 days, neither of them wants to leave.
This novella was adorable. My one complaint is that it was too short. I very easily could have read a full novel about these two, and enjoyed every second of it. I loved the Christmas vibes and the cute and cosy romance. It was just what I needed for a short Christmassy read. I also loved the fact that we saw a little guest appearance from my favourite characters from the series: Lilia and Raynar.
If you’re looking for a super short, cute cosy fantasy with Christmas vibes, I definitely recommend picking this one up. It’s short enough to read in one sitting, and perfect for bumping up those reading challenges before the end of the year. If you haven’t read this series, you’d still be fine reading this one, and it might just give you the itch to catch up on the entire series.
