Two best friends fake date to reach their holiday happily ever after in this first romantic comedy in the Lovelight series.
A pasture of dead trees. A hostile takeover of the Santa barn by a family of raccoons. And shipments that have mysteriously gone missing. Lovelight Farms is not the magical winter wonderland of Stella Bloom’s dreams.
In an effort to save the Christmas tree farm she’s loved since she was a kid, Stella enters a contest with Instagram-famous influencer Evelyn St. James. With the added publicity and the $100,000 cash prize, Stella might just be able to save the farm from its financial woes. There’s just one problem. To make the farm seem like a romantic destination for the holidays, she lied on her application and said she owns Lovelight Farms with her boyfriend. Only…there is no boyfriend.
Enter best friend Luka Peters. He just stopped by for some hot chocolate and somehow got a farm and a serious girlfriend in the process. But fake dating his best friend might be the best Christmas present he’s ever received.
“People get too caught up in how things look, instead of how things feel.”
Lovelight Farms is a book that has been on my radar for a couple of years, but as someone who isn’t really a big contemporary reader, I just never really looked much into it. However, after reading and enjoying BK Borison’s Christmas paranormal romance Good Spirits, I thought it was about time that I tried some of her previous work. Lovelight Farms pleasantly surprised me, and I ended up enjoying it even more than Good Spirits.
One thing I really enjoyed about this book was that although it is a festive read, it’s a little bit more subtle. It’s not in your face Christmas (which I also love!) but just a cute romance set in the lead up to the festive season. Add to that the fact that it was friends to lovers which, although I don’t read contemporary romance often, is my favourite romance trope. All of this, in addition to the great plot, just made this an utter win for me.
As someone who doesn’t read contemporary romance very often, I’m always apprehensive when I start reading one. I’m such a plot driven reader that I’m always left wanting something more. However, with this one because there were things going wrong on the farm, I felt like there was a little mystery going on in the background that definitely kept my interest piqued throughout the book. I think this was definitely one of the factors that made me really enjoy this book.
My one little gripe with Lovelight Farms, and the only thing I wasn’t crazy about was the third act conflict that just felt really silly and forced. Throughout the whole book, our FMC is adamant that her best friend (who drops everything for her at any point in his life) cannot have romantic feelings for her… and honestly it just became annoying. Even after he expresses his love for her she disputes him… on his OWN FEELINGS! And it just really irritated me and made me not like her. She was, at times, absolutely insufferable. And this definitely affected my enjoyment of the book in the latter quarter.
Lovelight Farms was, as a whole, a delight. I definitely intend to read some more of BK Borison’s writing in the future. I think she is one romance author that I might end up really enjoying. However, I’m really hoping she steps away from the third act conflict because I’m already growing a little tired of it. It’s too predictable. Having said that, I’m glad I finally gave this one a go, and I will definitely be continuing the series in the new year.

Ugh, 3rd Act break ups are annoying. And questioning his feelings? Pffft!
