REBELLION HAPPENS IN THE SHADOWS

Vivien Featherswallow has uncovered the secret language of dragons. Now can she use it to end a war?

The extraordinary sequel to the instant #1 Sunday Times Bestseller, A Language of Dragons

Vivien Featherswallow has translated a secret language of dragons – sparking an all-out civil war, with dragons and humans fighting on both sides, in the process.

And after defeating Prime Minister Wyvernmire and escaping Bletchley Park, Vivien has become the reluctant face of the rebellion – and been labelled the most wanted criminal in Britain. But what good is a rebel who must remain in hiding, powerless to help her friends?

Unsure of her purpose, and torn with doubt about the life she thought she was meant to lead, Vivien travels to the remote Scottish Isles to find a mysterious, long-forgotten species of dragon – one which might hold the key to ending the war… forever.

An epic, sweeping, unputdownable fantasy, A War of Wyverns is the unmissable sequel to the instant #1 Sunday Times Bestseller, A Language of Dragons.

“The Koinamens is a language and language is a weapon.”

My top read of 2025 was A Language of Dragons. I fell head over heels in love with this historical fantasy, set in an alternative Britain, where dragons live alongside people. I loved everything about the first book, and so when I got accepted for an eARC of the second book I dived straight in. I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen with these characters and this world. A War of Wyverns was everything I could have wanted for this sequel. It was fast paced, action packed and I couldn’t put it down.

A War of Wyverns picks up right where A Language of Dragons left off, with Viv joining forced with the rebellion to try and save everyone from the actions of the Prime Minister and the deadly Romanian Dragons that she has allied herself with. I’ll be honest, I really expected this one to be a bit more slow paced, but the pacing was fast right from the start. Within a few chapters, I couldn’t put it down and was anxious to find out what was going to happen with all my beloved characters.

This book has twists and turns around every corner. Some of them I guessed and figured out, and some I did not. One of the twists that I did figure out was revealed a lot earlier than I was expecting, so although I was fully expecting it, I was still surprised by the timing of the reveal which I think is really clever of the author. Even when you guess the plot points, she still surprises you with how they all come about, and I absolutely loved that. SF Williamson has definitely entered my ‘authors to watch out for’ list and I will be looking out for all other books/series from her to read.

A War of Wyverns was a fantastic follow up to A Language of Dragons. It was action paced and fast paced and I loved every single moment of it. I will admit that it slowed down in pacing a little bit in the middle of the book, that made it a little tedious to get through at moments. However, retrospectively all of the things that happened in those slow moments, were vital world building. However, due to this, I definitely preferred A Language of Dragons just that little bit more. Having said that, I cannot wait to read the third and final book in this series, whenever it releases. This is one of my favourite dragon series and I can’t wait to see how it all wraps up. A War of Wyverns was a definite must-read.

“Britannia may be burning, reduced to smoke and embers, but embers are as hot as the fire that created them. And every fire starts with a single spark.”
