Before Iris sat at her typewriter and before Enva sang her song, a young goddess wandered dreams…

Born to the firelit domain of the underworld, Matilda is the youngest goddess of her clan, blessed with humble messenger magic. But in a land where gods kill each other for magic, Matilda must come of age sooner than most. She may be known to carry letters through the realms, but she also carries secrets of her own: one of them deadly, the other a mortal boy who dreams of her, despite the fact they have never met…

Ten years ago, Vincent of Beckett wrote to Matilda on the darkest night of his life – begging the goddess he befriended in dreams for aid. But his prayer went unanswered, forever hardening his heart against the gods. That is until the same goddess comes tumbling through his window, bearing a letter to change both their destinies. For Matilda and Vincent are tangled together by threads of fate and the promise of a future beyond dreams, one that might rewrite the dark, blood-soaked ways of the gods…or end them.

“I am yours, Red. I will always be yours. Not even death can change that.”

There are no words to explain just how excited I was to get my hands on Wild Reverence. Within the past year, I have become the biggest Rebecca Ross fangirl. Ever since I read her adult duology, Elements of Cadence, I have just fell head over heels in love with her work. So, when I got the chance to read Wild Reverence early, I jumped at the chance. I am so glad I did as well as this is one of the most beautiful novels I’ve ever read. I loved every single moment.

I’ll be honest and say I went into this book completely blind. I did not read the blurb. I personally love to go in blind, and as I’d loved Divine Rivals and Ruthless Vows so much, I knew I wanted to read this without reading the blurb. That being said, I was a little surprised by who the main characters were. As I went into this book I knew it was a prequel about the gods, and I went in fully expecting a beautiful fleshed out backstory of Dacre and Enva. I was surprised to find it is in fact not their story. We follow the story of Matilda, a goddess who is born of both Underling and Skyward gods. This makes her the only god who can travel to both realms. Despite this being a big surprise for me, I absolutely loved every moment of Matilda and Vincent’s story. A forbidden love between goddess and mortal? Yes please. Give me ALL the angst!

One thing I love the most about Rebecca Ross is her writing style. Honestly, I don’t know how she does it but her writing is just so magical and whimsical and nothing could happen in her books for 300 pages and I’d still love every second of it, because of how gorgeous her writing is to fall into. I would like to clarify that is not the case… lots of things happen plot wise in this book, but you know what I mean! Right from the first chapter I was head over heels in love with this book and the storyline. There are moments in the first part of the book, which is regarding Matilda’s childhood, where it’s a little bit slow paced. But you honestly don’t care because you just feel honoured to be reading such magic. Rebecca Ross has cemented herself as my favourite author with just how magical her writing is.

Wild Reverence was just so beautiful. I truly loved every moment of it. The writing, the characterisations, the plot… everything was just on another level. This book does feel very different from Divine Rivals and Ruthless Vows and you can definitely tell that it is intended for a more mature audience. It was just absolutely stunning in every way. I laughed, I swooned, I fell in love and I cried. I went through every emotion reading this book and it wrecked me in the very best way. I honestly cannot wait for everyone to read this book as it truly is a masterpiece.

This book was everything I wanted and more. I would read a million books set in this world, and I still would love Rebecca to write more about Dacre and Enva. I loved the little glimpses of them throughout this book, and I loved seeing how this story links in with Roman and Iris’. I already am on tenterhooks waiting for Rebecca Ross’ next book, because everything this woman writes is gold. I will, in the meantime, be working my way through her backlist and I can’t wait. If you’re a fan of the Letters of Enchantment series, I highly recommend you pick this one up. If you haven’t read them, I do recommend that you read Divine Rivals and Ruthless Vows first as I do think it will really enhance the reading experience, but it’s not absolutely necessary and you can still fully understand this one without them. Wild Reverence is a standout of 2025 and not to be missed!

“War only makes love flame brighter, defiant. It seems to bloom from the bloodshed you leave behind, unfurling from the most unlikely of places. From the broken seams of the world. From the graves and the anguish and the fear you inspire.”
