Welcome to Spooky Season!! The follow-up to Erin Sterling’s New York Times bestselling hit The Ex Hex features fan favorite Gwyn and the spine-tinglingly handsome Wells Penhallow as they battle a new band of witches and their own magical chemistry.Gwyn Jones is perfectly happy with her life in Graves Glen. She, her mom, and her cousin have formed a new and powerful coven; she’s running a successful witchcraft shop, Something Wicked; and she’s started mentoring some of the younger witches in town. As Halloween approaches, there’s only one problem—Llewellyn “Wells” Penhallow.
Wells has come to Graves Glen to re-establish his family’s connection to the town they founded as well as to make a new life for himself after years of being the dutiful son in Wales. When he opens up a shop of his own, Penhallow’s, just across the street from Something Wicked, he quickly learns he’s gotten more than he bargained for in going up against Gwyn.
When their professional competition leads to a very personal—and very hot—kiss, both Wells and Gwyn are determined to stay away from each other, convinced the kiss was just a magical fluke. But when a mysterious new coven of witches come to town and Gwyn’s powers begin fading, she and Wells must work together to figure out just what these new witches want and how to restore Gwyn’s magic before it’s too late.
I first read The Ex Hex, the first book in this series last year at Halloween time. I didn’t obsessively love it, but I did find it a super fun spooky season read. Well after trying to catch up with my series this year, I decided to re-read it and then dive straight into the sequel. The Kiss Curse was even better than the first book in my opinion, and has definitely bumped this series up to a must read every year for Halloween (even though I read it in July).
The Kiss Curse is set in the same Halloween-inspired town, but this time we are following the story of Gwyn, Viv’s best friend and all the witchy shenanigans when Rhys’ grumpy brother Wells moves to town and then opens a business rivalling Gwyn’s magic shop. I absolutely loved every moment of this book. It was so much better than the first book for me, as it had all of my all time favourite tropes in this one. You have grumpy vs sunshine, rivals to lovers… it was such a fun and quick read.
One reason I think I loved this one so much more than The Ex Hex, was the fact that it wasn’t a second chance romance. Call me a stubborn ass but I really don’t like second chance romances. I feel like I miss out on the cute getting to know you stage of the romance, and for me once something has gone wrong once… what’s the point? Those problems are still gonna be there… but that’s just me. But this new romance between Gwyn and Wells was just perfection for me. You had them getting to know each other while being rivals. I just loved the dynamic between these characters from start to finish.
The Kiss Curse was such an easy read, and just some nice witchy fun. Basically… it was perfect for me. I loved every single moment of it, and I am so excited for the third and final book of this series to release. I can’t wait to read the romance of the third Penhallow brother… and I will be counting down the days for it. If you love a good romance, with a dash of magic, this series is without a doubt a must read for you. It truly it fantastic!
