5 Romantasy Books To Get You Started With The Fantasy Genre

I did a post a little while ago which was 5 Great Fantasy Books If You’re New To Fantasy. I stand by all 5 of the recommendations in that post, but the majority of them are plot focused, and with the rise of Romantasy I thought I would do a second part of that post but with books that are more romance focused that romance fans may want to dig into.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas is probably the most popular of this series. An adult Romantasy series that follows Feyre, a young girl who finds herself in the Fae realm and having to deal with the drama of different faerie courts. I think this is probably the series that a lot of people start with for romantasy. It is in no way my favourite, but having its roots in the familiar and beloved Beauty and the Beast tale it is definitely a good place to start.

From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L Armentrout is another very popular Romantasy series. If you do a search for Romantasy, chance is you’re going to find this book in there. From Blood and Ash follows the story of Poppy, a young maiden who has been shielded for most of her life, and is promised to the gods. This one is perfect for new fantasy readers as it doesn’t confuse you with details right away. As Poppy learns about the world, the reader does as well, which makes it a great starter Fantasy series.

These Hollow Vows by Lexi Ryan is the only Young Adult book on this list. Fear not though, there is a little bit of spice if that’s what you’re into. This one follows Brie, a human who is thrown into a faerie world in order to save her sister, where she find all is not as it seems, and she needs to decide which of the two Fae Princes she should trust. This is a perfect one for ACOTAR fans. It’s not the best series, there are some glaring plot holes, but if you just want a fun ride it’s definitely worth a read. Plus there’s only two books so it’s perfect if you don’t wanna be sucked into a long series.

Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco is a Romantasy series that straddles the line between YA and NA in terms of the age range it is aimed at. It follows the story of Emelia, a young witch who is living among humans. When her sister is murdered she teams up with one of the Princes of Hell, Wrath, to try and find her sisters killer. I was in two minds as to whether to include this one or not as I enjoyed the first book, but felt the later books in the series fell a little bit flat. However if you’re looking for a romantasy book that is set in this world at the start, this one is for you.

Finally, the newest addition to the Romantasy family is Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. I have to say that this one is my favourite of the five books I’ve featured on this list. It is phenomenal. Fourth Wing follows the story of Violet, a young girl who has a chronic bone disorder who is determined to become a dragon rider, like the rest of her family. This book is fast paced, doesn’t get bogged down in world building details and the romance is absolute perfection. Warning, this one is going to be a 5 book series and only book 1 is out at the moment, but it is absolutely worth it.
