My Favourite Retellings

One of my all time favourite genres is retellings. I love retellings, whether that is of a super popular fairytale such as Beauty and the Beast, or something a little more obscure or taking only brief influences from the original tales. I just love them, and I love seeing what the authors have decided to do with the original tale. Here are five of my favourite retellings.

  • Malice, the first book in the Malice duology by Heather Walter is an LGBTQ+ retelling of Sleeping Beauty / Maleficent. I really enjoyed this one. It was such a unique and fresh take on this popular tale. I can’t wait to get my hands on the second book in the duology when it releases later this year.
  • Fawkes, a standalone from Nadine Brandes is a YA Historical Fantasy retelling of the tale of Guy Fawkes. As someone from Britain, I freaking loved everything about this book. It was just utterly phenomenal. I highly recommend this book to everyone.
  • Dorothy Must Die, the first book in the Dorothy Must Die series by Danielle Paige is a YA Paranormal retelling of The Wizard of Oz. I have only read 2 out of the 4 books in this series but I really enjoyed it. It’s a really interesting take on the tale, where Dorothy finds her way back to Oz and becomes the baddest witch Oz has ever seen.
  • The Wrath and the Dawn, the first book in the Wrath and Dawn series by Renee Ahdieh is a YA Fantasy retelling of One Thousand and One Nights. I didn’t really know much about the original tale of this one, but I loved this fantastic fantasy duology. It’s phenomenal.
  • Sweet Black Waves, Book 1 in the Sweet Black Waves trilogy is a YA Fantasy retelling of Tristan and Isolde. I adore this series. I still need to read the third book in the trilogy but I absolutely cannot wait. This is a fantastic YA romantasy!
