From Goodreads:
Picking up from A Discovery of Witches’ cliffhanger ending, Shadow of Night takes Diana and Matthew on a trip through time to Elizabethan London, where they are plunged into a world of spies, magic, and a coterie of Matthew’s old friends, the School of Night. As the search for Ashmole 782 deepens and Diana seeks out a witch to tutor her in magic, the net of Matthew’s past tightens around them, and they embark on a very different—and vastly more dangerous—journey.

After loving the first book in the All Souls trilogy, I couldn’t help but dive straight into the second book. I was so excited to see what happened next to Diana and Matthew after their jump through time. I wish I could say that I loved this one as much as the first one, but I didn’t. In fact… I didn’t even make it all the way through. I was so bored and disinterested in this one.

I started listening to the audiobook back at the beginning of February, and 7 weeks later I was sure I must be almost finished (after all I listen to audiobooks on 1.5 which usually cuts a few hours off the run time) only to realise I still had 10 hours left. I got to about half way before I decided this one just wasn’t doing it for me. I found that the pacing of the book was ridiculously slow. I read over 300 pages of this one and hardly anything happened. The characters I fell in love with in the first book were gone and replaced with these idiotic and irritating characters. I just couldn’t continue. I wish I’d liked this one as I truly loved the set up and the first book. But this one was just missing a lot for me. Maybe I will go back to it in the future and finish the trilogy, but honestly it will be not be any time soon. I’ve completely fallen out of love with this series.
