From Goodreads:
A story of scorned witches, sinister curses, and resurrection, The Bone Witch is the start of a dark fantasy trilogy. When Tea accidentally resurrects her brother, Fox, from the dead, she learns she is different from the other witches in her family. Her gift for necromancy means that she’s a bone witch, a title that makes her feared and ostracized by her community. But Tea finds solace and guidance with an older, wiser bone witch, who takes Tea and her brother to another land for training.
In her new home, Tea puts all her energy into becoming an asha—one who can wield elemental magic. But dark forces are approaching quickly, and in the face of danger, Tea will have to overcome her obstacles…and make a powerful choice.
“There is no greater strength than the ability to understand and accept your own flaws.”
The Bone Witch is a book that I haven’t really had on my radar for very long. I had heard it mentioned here and there in some book groups, but I never really looked into it. It wasn’t until I was looking for some YA Fantasy books that would be appropriate for ‘spooky season’ that I kept seeing The Bone Witch brought up and recommended. So, I finally bought this trilogy and started listening to them on audio. I am now kicking myself for not reading these sooner. These are everything I could ever want in a YA book and more.
The Bone Witch follows the story of Tea, a girl who has the ability to raise the dead. Feared by everyone else she is taken to a school for bone witches to learn how to use and control her power. But not everything is as it seems and soon Tea finds herself in trouble with no knowledge of how to get out of it.
I really enjoyed this book. I did find the audio edition jarring at first as there are scenes at the end of each chapter told from another perspective and the change in narrator when you’re not expecting it, and it doesn’t tell you the name of the character speaking, can be kind of confusing. However, I just let the confusion wash over me and just went with it and I ended up loving this audio edition. I listened to the whole thing in three days… which is super quick for me with an audiobook.
Tea is such an awesome character to follow. She is flawed and imperfect and I loved everything about her. She was strong while also showing vulnerability which I have really missed reading. The Bone Witch is such an old school YA and it made me realise how much I miss this. A lot of book lately have become all about these kickass characters who have to be strong all the time and not show weakness. They have to be perfectly capable with a blade and already know how to use it. Tea was not that. She was clumsy, she made mistakes and I loved it because we had the opportunity to grow along with her. I miss YA books like this.
The Bone Witch was creepy, action packed and has a slight hint of romance. I absolutely loved it. I am so glad that I finally decided to pick this wonderful book up. I can’t wait to see what is going to happen with Tea in the next book. I am most definitely going straight into the audio of that one. If, like me, you really miss some of the old school YA, then I highly recommend that you pick this one up and give it a try.
