Popular Books I Have DNF’d

I am a big DNF’er. I never used to be… I used to be one of those readers that would struggle through and finish every single book I started. But then I used to get myself into a book slump where I didn’t want to read at all. That was the point when I decided that life is too short, and there are too many books out there, for me to struggle through ones I don’t enjoy. So now, I usually give a book to page 50-100 to grab me, if it doesn’t by then… it’s a goner. Here are 5 pretty popular books/series that I have abandoned.

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart was a super popular book a couple of years back. Everyone seemed to be reading it and everyone was loving it. I couldn’t wait to read it… and I made it about 3 or 4 chapters in. I was so bored and didn’t really care about what happened to any of the characters… as I didn’t like any of them. So I decided to cut my losses and just get rid.

I was so excited for A Whole New World by Liz Braswell when I first heard about it. I am a huuuuuge Disney fan and I was super excited for this twist on the tales. But then I started reading it and didn’t feel like I was reading anything different. It just felt like the ending of Aladdin but without the beginning. I was bored and felt like it would be more enjoyable to just watch the movie so I decided not to continue.

The Maze Runner by James Dashner should have been one that I loved. I am a huge lover of dystopian novels and series and I actually really enjoy the storyline of this one. I loved the movies. But I have started this book 3 times and each time I get to the same point, lose interest and stop reading. Clearly James’ writing just isn’t for me.

Now for the controversial ones…

Now, initially I absolutely loved Shatter Me by Taherah Mafi. I absolutely loved the first book. I thought it was so unique. The story, the characters, the way it was wrote. It was incredible. Then I read book 2… it was okay… then the dreaded love interest switch happened and I HATED it. I felt like there was such a dramatic switch in character development. It was strange and odd and I felt like she kind of just changed it to satisfy fans. I hated that and… I absolutely despise Warner. He is a psychopath and I find absolutely nothing likeable about him… so after the novella that goes in between books 2 and 3 I cut my losses and put this series in the DNF pile.

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black is a massively loved series. I wish I was among the people who loved it… but I genuinely do not understand what people love about this series. I started The Cruel Prince on physical book and made it 2 chapters in before giving up. I was just so unbelievably bored. A year later I started it again on Audio because of how much some friends love this series. I wish I hadn’t bothered. If it wasn’t for the fact I was listening to this rather than reading it, I would have DNF’d it, but I did, somehow, manage to get through the entire first book. Honestly, I don’t even know how! This book, in my opinion, is boring! There isn’t a single likeable character. I hate them all! Jude included… I’m not even sorry. I didn’t care about what happened to a single one of them. And the romance? It was so freaking bizarre, I rewound the audiobook to check I hadn’t missed something because I was all like WTF?! So yeah… this one isn’t for me and the other books in the series quickly went to the DNF pile.
