Popular Tropes: Enemies To Lovers
The trope I’ve chosen to write about this month is probably the most popular trope right now. Everywhere you look on blogs, bookstagram and booktok you see people recommending books that are ‘Enemies to Lovers’. It’s a trope that has been around for years and years and it’s always a well loved one with readers.
I Love Enemies To Lovers Because…
The reason I love Enemies to Lovers is because it creates good conflict. Books, no matter what genre you’re reading, would be super boring if there’s no conflict. Enemies to Lovers creates such a fun conflict. You get irritated when the guy is being an asshole but then you can’t help but start to love him. It’s such a fun journey to read. I also love Enemies to Lovers is there’s a whole ‘will they, won’t they’ aspect. How long is it going to take for them to get together. I personally absolutely love that journey.
I Hate Enemies to Lovers because…
I am very much in the minority here but I often dislike some Enemies to Lovers books. In some of them I just find that the guy is too much of an asshole. I usually end up just disliking him and not really feeling the romance. My other issue is that sometimes there doesn’t seem to be any development between the enemies part and the lovers part and it can sometimes just seem really random. I really didn’t get on with The Cruel Prince by Holly Black for this reason. I absolutely hated the lead male character and then I when the romance element started I was just like… huh… really?
Overall, I do enjoy enemies to lovers books but they are in no way my favourite trope. Here however are five enemies to lovers books that I think were done very well.
