The enemy is Other. The enemy is us.They’re down here, they’re up there, they’re nowhere. They want the Earth, they want us to have it. They came to wipe us out, they came to save us.
But beneath these riddles lies one truth: Cassie has been betrayed. So has Ringer. Zombie. Nugget. And all 7.5 billion people who used to live on our planet. Betrayed first by the Others, and now by ourselves.
In these last days, Earth’s remaining survivors will need to decide what’s more important: saving themselves…or saving what makes us human.
I first read The 5th Wave about 7 or 8 years ago when I was first going through my post-Hunger Games dystopia obsession. I really enjoyed the first two books back then but I just never got around to picking up this final book in the series. I finally decided to pick it up, and as I’ve been on an audiobook kick lately I decided to download the audiobook for this one. I wish I could say that I enjoyed this one as much as the previous two books but unfortunately that was not the case.
I don’t know whether it was because I had such a huge gap of time between reading the previous books and this one, but I just didn’t enjoy it all that much. It’s told from a lot of point of views and I felt like that was detrimental to the story. Listening to the audiobook there were many, many times where I had to pause and was like: wait… who is this talking right now? I couldn’t quite decipher the different characters. They were written where all the guy characters sounded the same and all the girl characters sounded the same in terms of written voice, so I didn’t feel like the narration was quite distinctive enough. In addition to this, I really hated the ending of this book. I kind of felt like I’d wasted time following this series, just to end up really disappointed.
The Last Star was a lackluster finale for me. I’m glad I read it and finally got to see how it all ended for the characters. If I hadn’t, I’d have always been left wondering. However, it’s not a series I am ever going to re-read. It wasn’t a terrible book, otherwise I would have DNF’d it, but it was disappointing to me.
