Favourite Reads: Top 5 Fantasy

Fantasy is without a doubt my favourite genre… ever. Ever since I was sent an ARC of this little book called Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas back in 2011, I fell head over heels in love with fantasy and now 99% of the books I read are epic fantasy. I’m sure you can imagine just how many fantasy books I have read in the past ten years. It was so incredibly difficult to narrow over 100 fantasy books read down to just 5. Maybe I’ll do another one in the future so I can feature some more of my favourites. I’ve purposefully left the Queen of Fantasy, Sarah J Maas off this list as I feel like everyone knows about her books already and I wanted to feature some that people may not have heard of or read. Here are my top 5 Fantasy reads.

1. The Falconer, Book 1 in the Falconer Series by Elizabeth May

The Falconer is one of my all time favourite fantasy series and it actually makes me super sad that I don’t see more people raving about this one. It’s an epic fantasy with a little mixture of steampunk in there and it was just absolute perfection to me. We have an absolutely kick-ass heroine who is a debutante by day and a fae-killer by night. It was filled to the brim with action, intrigue and romance. A definite must-read.

2. Roar, Book 2 in the Stormheart Series by Cora Carmack

I’ve been such a huge Cora Carmack fan for so long. I read her contemporary series first and I absolutely loved it but I was so excited that she wrote an epic fantasy series. Roar is amazing. It’s a fantasy series that is heavily focused on power that comes from storms and elements. I absolutely loved this premise and it has an amazing romance to match!

3. Blood Heir, Book 1 in the Blood Heir Trilogy by Amelie Wen Zhao

Blood Heir is a book that I hadn’t heard much about before I got this one in an Illumicrate box this year. It’s the only book on this list that is a recent release, releasing late 2019. You know it’s a great book if it’s gone from unknown onto a list of my all time favourite fantasy books. It’s an epic fantasy that is also a retelling of Anastasia. Now, as a child, Anastasia was my favourite movie of all time so I was so excited to see a fantasy retelling of that tale. I absolutely loved every moment. I am dying to get my hands on the second book in the trilogy.

4. The Orphan Queen, Book 1 in the Orphan Queen Duology by Jodi Meadows

The Orphan Queen is one of my all time favourite fantasy series. I love a series about Princes and Princesses’ trying to take back their throne and that is exactly the premise of this book. In an aid to survive, the Princess has become a thief and can fight better than almost anyone. It’s action packed and just utterly brilliant. If you like books with a kick-ass heroine then you’ll love this one.

5. Rebel of the Sands, Book 1 in the Rebel of the Sands Series by Alwyn Hamilton

Rebel of the Sands was my first fantasy series that is set in the middle east. I loved this new setting and it was a completely unique series to me. It’s filled with action, rebellion and romance and I loved every single moment of it. After reading this series Alwyn Hamilton became a auto-buy author for me. If you haven’t read this one yet I highly recommend you pick this one up. You won’t be disappointed.
