Spooky Season: Witches
It’s time for Take Three of Spooky Season Recommendations, and this time we are talking about my all time favourite creature to read about: Witches. Believe it or not, there was once a time where if a book had witches/warlocks it was a pass for me as I just didn’t like them all that much. I really don’t know when this changed, but now if a book has witches it’s an immediate must-read for me. Here’s five of my favourite Witch books perfect for October reading. You’ll have probably seen me recommend some of these a million times as some of my all time favourite books are on this list.

Threadneedle, Book 1 in the Language of Magic Series by Cari Thomas.
The Language of Magic series is a series of quite chunky books, so just be prepared for these books to maybe take you a while, but my god are they worth it. Set in our world, this one is an Urban Fantasy with witches and is set in London. Our main character has been brought up in a family where using your magic is frowned upon, so when she meets some other witches, she is torn between her upbringing and this new magical world she is exposed to. Add in a twist of mystery, I adored everything about this book. You can read my spoiler free review by clicking on the thumbnail of the cover. This is an unfinished series. Books 1, 1.5 and 2 are currently out with at least one more novella and novel planned.
The Crown of Oaths and Curses, Book 1 in the Mortal Fates Series by J. Bree
This is a relatively new addition to my favourite witch books, with me just reading this one within the past year. This is such a fantastic enemies to loves series… and when I say enemies I mean ENEMIES!!!! Set in a totally new world, this is epic fantasy at its best where a witch is fated to meet her mate, a fae… the only issue is that the witches and the fae have been at war for centuries. This is honestly such a fantastic book and I recommend it to everyone. I highly recommend reading the two prequel novellas before you dive into this one. It will help you in liking the main character. You can see my spoiler free review by clicking on the thumbnail of the cover. This is an unfinished series. Books 1 and 2 are out, with a planned third book to come.
The Ex Hex, Book 1 in the Ex Hex Trilogy by Erin Sterling.
This is such a funny one for me. When I first read The Ex Hex, I gave it three stars. I just thought it was okay. I first read it via audio and I found it fun but it wasn’t anything special. Then when the second book came out, I re-read book 1 and now it’s a must re-read for me every October. I adore it. This is definitely one that grows on you. It’s a cosy and fun second-chance romance between witches and lots of magical going-ons happen. You can read my spoiler free review of this one by clicking the thumbnail of the cover. This is a recently finished series. Book 3 comes out TODAY! Happy Release Day!!
Her Majesty’s Royal Coven, Book 1 in the Her Majesty’s Royal Coven Series by Juno Dawson.
This is a dark and gritty Urban Fantasy set mainly in Britain about a coven of witches that live in secret from the humans. There’s not much I can say about this one without spoiling anything, other than it’s darker than your typical witch book from this list. It’s fantastic and has the best audio edition, narrated by the fantastic Nicola Coughlan. I loved every second of this book and at the moment of writing this post, I am part way through the second book. You can see my spoiler free review by clicking on the thumbnail of the cover. This is an unfinished series. Books 1, 1.5 and 2 are released. The final book is due for release in 2025.
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
You didn’t think I’d forgotten my favourite book of all time did you? Naturally no witch book recommendations list would be right, without the beautiful, uplifting and magical cosy fantasy, The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches. I can’t even tell you what this book means to me, but I am not being dramatic and truly mean it when I say this book saved my life. If there is one book you choose from this list to read, make sure it is this one. You can read my spoiler free review by clicking on the thumbnail of the cover. This is a standalone book, however Sangu Mandanna has another cosy fantasy coming out next year!
