After saving themselves and their fellow students from a life pitched against one another, Sophie and Agatha are back home again, living happily ever after. But life isn’t exactly a fairytale. When Agatha secretly wishes she’d chosen a different happy ending with Prince Tedros, the gates to the School for Good and Evil open once again. But Good and Evil are no longer enemies and Princes and Princesses may not be what they seem, as new bonds form and old ones shatter.
A World Without Princes is such a fun read. I first read The School for Good and Evil back in 2022 and I just didn’t continue at the time as there were other books I wanted to read more. In a bid to catch up and read more of the audiobooks I had downloaded, I finally picked up the second book in the series and honestly, I’m glad I did. While I am way past the age that these books are aimed at, they are such fun reads, I just really enjoy them.
A World Without Princes picks up where A School for Good and Evil left off, with Agatha and Sophie back home away from the school. But when something happens to force them back, they find that everything has changed. There is no school for Good and Evil anymore but instead the School of Girls and the School of Boys and the boys want revenge. Sophie and Agatha must work together to bring harmony back to the schools, but at what cost.
I honestly really enjoy that at the heart of this series is the female friendship. It’s so refreshing to see this and to not necessarily have the romance the most important storyline. One of the things I really enjoy about this series is the great messages. As a middle grade book I love all the deeper lessons for kids running throughout the storylines, like it’s okay to not have your prince. Looks are deceiving and you can’t really tell who is good or evil. In this one, I loved the storyline of Sophie trying to hard to be good and to change her nature. That we are not what we have been told we are, and that you can make a choice to be good. I just loved that.
Is this series the best middle grade I’ve ever read? No! But it’s so fun and enjoyable and I really like the little hints to fairytales and Arthurian legends. I thoroughly enjoyed A World Without Princes and I will definitely be picking up the next book soon. It’s just such a fun ride.
