Bookish Things I Want To Leave Behind in 2023

There’s been a few of these posts floating around on social media, about the things that we are a bit sick of and want to leave behind. I have 3 main things I’d like to see left behind in 2023.

1. “Does X count towards your reading goal?”

I don’t care what you put in the ‘X’, the answer is YES! It’s your reading goal. It’s personal. Count whatever the heck you want!! You wanna add a 3 page comic you read in a newspaper? GO AHEAD! You wanna add a novella that’s only 40 pages? DO IT! You wanna add re-reads? GO AHEAD! Reading is reading! Can we stop trying to gatekeep what counts for people’s individual challenges?

2. “Audiobooks don’t count!”

I’m not gonna lie… this one BOILS MY BLOOD! Let’s leave this one behind, as I am sick to DEATH of seeing people say audiobooks don’t count as reading. Just because you don’t physically use your eyes for it, doesn’t mean anything. The books are unabridged versions, they are the exact same. You’re just listening to it instead. Would you take your child to school and claim the book that you’re reading them doesn’t count because they can’t actually read yet? Of course you wouldn’t! So let’s stop with this one too shall we? Some people are blind and can’t read… some can’t because of learning difficulties and some can’t just because they don’t have time. Stop claiming the don’t count… it says more about you than any audiobook listener! Don’t be a dick!

3. “The book isn’t good if it doesn’t have spice.”

Now this one will be a controversial one, as I know spicy books are all the rage these days. And if you love spice… good for you! I am so happy you’re found books that you enjoy! But I cannot lie, it aggravates me when someone recommends a book and someone replied with ‘oh if there’s no spice, it can’t be good!’. Books do not need spice to be good. If you don’t want to read it because you prefer spice, that’s awesome, you don’t have to. But saying that they need spice to be a good book is not cool!
