5 Books Perfect For That Back to School Feeling

September is back to school month here in the UK, and as a teacher myself I always slow down on my reading in September due to how busy it gets. However, there are so many books with back to school themes that I love. Whether that means it’s a YA book with the characters being in school, or a dark academia, or a magic school… here are 5 books with back to school themes that are perfect for September reading.

With Fire in their Blood by Kat Delacorte is a great YA about a character who is moved to a small town in the Italian mountains, and ends up going to a school there, where not all is as it seems. It has witches and magic and intrigue which makes it perfect not only for those back to school vibes, but also autumnal vibes.

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead will always be a staple for me on these types of lists. I adore this old school YA series and who back in the early 2010s wouldn’t have wanted to go to a school for vampires and half vampires and learn to fight like a badass. I have recently purchased the Fairyloot editions of this series and I actually cannot wait to re-read these!

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff is the first adult book on this list. It is definitely not for younger readers but is one of the most epic fantasy schooling books I have read. It follows our main character as she is sent to a school for assassins. I mean… how awesome is that? What more would you want? If you haven’t read this series… go get it now!

Vicious by VE Schwab is another adult book, and while this one is definitely more fantasy that academia, it does fall into the fantasy/dark academia category due to the background of the characters having met at university and the hero/villain powers aspect comes from a very educational and scientific background. Makes it perfect for those dark academia vibes!

And finally, The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern is another adult book and it is one of the most beautifully written books on this list. It is very lyrical and mysterious and is set in a library where you can just get lost in all the different stories. Originally I rated this book 3 stars as I found it slow, but it is one of the books that has stayed with me the longest and I’ll often (years after reading it) just find myself thinking about how gorgeous this book is. I am determined to re-read this one at some point to see if I love it more the second time around.
