This is the story of how a Baggins had an adventure, and found himself doing and saying things altogether unexpected…Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of thirteen dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day, to whisk him away on a journey ‘there and back again’. They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon…
The prelude to The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies since its publication in 1937, establishing itself as one of the most beloved and influential books of the twentieth century.
The Hobbit has been on my radar for such a long time. I grew up in a household that loved Lord of the Rings and everything about it. I remember my Grandad buying me the Lord of the Rings trilogy books when I was around 10, and I really tried to read them back then but couldn’t really get into them. Because of that I just never tried again, and just loved and obsessed over the movies! Fast forward a lot of years, I am now determined to finally read these epic fantasy books, and I started with The Hobbit.
This is such a fun adventure book. I really enjoyed every moment of this book. It was really fun to see familiar scenes that I love so much in the movies, in their original form. It’s been quite a long while since I watched any of The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings movies so there was also a lot that I had forgotten, or that I wasn’t familiar with, so it still kept this fresh and interesting for me.
I will admit it took me a while to get used to the writing style, and so I read this one much slower than I typically read. But I still enjoyed every single moment of it. I am now going to go and watch all of The Hobbit movies again and I can’t wait to see how the book comes to life, now I have read it. I will definitely be going into the next Lord of the Rings book soon, and I cannot wait to see how I take to it in book form.
