From Goodreads:
This is what they deserve. They wanted me to be a monster. I will be the worst monster they ever created.Fifteen-year-old Sloane can incinerate an enemy at will—she is a Scion, a descendant of the ancient Orisha gods.
Under the Lucis’ brutal rule, her identity means her death if her powers are discovered. But when she is forcibly conscripted into the Lucis army on her fifteenth birthday, Sloane sees a new opportunity: to overcome the bloody challenges of Lucis training, and destroy them from within.
Sloane rises through the ranks and gains strength but, in doing so, risks something greater: losing herself entirely, and becoming the very monster that she ahbors.
Following one girl’s journey of magic, injustice, power, and revenge, this deeply felt and emotionally charged debut from Deborah Falaye, inspired by Yoruba-Nigerian mythology, is a magnetic combination of A Song of Wraiths and Ruin and Daughter of Smoke and Bone that will utterly thrill and capture readers.
“Yes, we are girls, but we are not prey. Tonight, we are alive.”
Blood Scion is a book that I hadn’t actually heard a lot about before I was offered the chance to read and review it. All I knew was that it was an epic fantasy, and honestly that’s all I needed to know. I am such a huge lover of everything fantasy, I knew that this would definitely be right up my street. I just did not realise how much. Wow! I loved absolutely everything about this incredible book.
Blood Scion follows the story of Sloane, a young teenager with a deadly secret. She is a Scion, a being of power. But living in a world where the Scions are killed, she must keep her power secret, or risk being found and murdered by the oppressive power in charge. When she is drafted into their child army to fight and kill the other Scions, Sloane must do all she can to protect herself and survive. But bigger things are at play… and she might just have to become the monster they want in order to fulfil her destiny.
I loved absolutely everything about this book. Right from the very start I was completely obsessed with this story. It was so much darker than I thought it was going to be. This book is filled with morally grey characters, who will do the most horrific things to survive… but you completely understand them and are rooting for them anyway. Deborah Falaye weaves such a powerful and moving story. I am amazed that this is her debut, as it is just phenomenal. Right from the start it is action-packed and fast-moving and you won’t be able to put it down.
I absolutely loved the Nigerian-mythology that is woven into this book. I am a huge fan of mythology, and I love reading books that introduces to me a mythology that I haven’t come across before. This was the case with Blood Scion. It was so intriguing to me to see their different gods, where their powers had come from etc. It really intrigued me even more and is definitely one of the reasons that I loved this book as much as I did.
Blood Scion has everything you could possibly want from a YA Fantasy. It is action-packed, filled to the brim with twists and turns you’ll never see coming… and even a hint of romance. Now I usually guess a lot of twists in the books that I read but in this one there was one twist that hit me, out of nowhere. I was so shocked and I loved that! I love a book that can shock me! I have been left reeling, dying to get my hands on the second book in this series. If you’re looking for a new epic fantasy… look no further. This one is a must-read!
