As a third-year Ph.D. candidate, Olive Smith doesn’t believe in lasting romantic relationships–but her best friend does, and that’s what got her into this situation. Convincing Anh that Olive is dating and well on her way to a happily ever after was always going to take more than hand-wavy Jedi mind tricks: Scientists require proof. So, like any self-respecting biologist, Olive panics and kisses the first man she sees. That man is none other than Adam Carlsen, a young hotshot professor–and well-known ass. Which is why Olive is positively floored when Stanford’s reigning lab tyrant agrees to keep her charade a secret and be her fake boyfriend. But when a big science conference goes haywire, putting Olive’s career on the Bunsen burner, Adam surprises her again with his unyielding support and even more unyielding… six-pack abs.
Suddenly their little experiment feels dangerously close to combustion. And Olive discovers that the only thing more complicated than a hypothesis on love is putting her own heart under the microscope.
I’m really not usually a big lover of contemporary romance books. I’m usually a fantasy reader through and through. However, when pretty much every single bookish friend I had was raving about The Love Hypothesis I decided to give it a go and see what all the fuss was about. Oh. My. Goodness! I am so, so glad that I picked this one up. If any book is worth the hype that it gets… this book is! I could not put this book down. Right from the very start I was completely sucked into this story and I couldn’t put the book down until I’d read the entire thing.
The Love Hypothesis follows the story of Olive, a graduate student working towards her Biology phd. She gets herself into a fake-relationship with grumpy broody professor Adam, and sparks fly. They’re both pretending to be in a relationship with the other, but when it comes to an end, will they be able to let each other go?
This was without a doubt the most adorable romance I have ever read. I absolutely loved the fact that the two main characters were Biologists. While I am definitely not a scientist, I teach Psychology (which has a lot of biology in it) and so I could totally associate with their life at the University and I was so amused when they were discussing the technical Biological concepts that I fully understood and teach about. It was so hilarious for me to see that part of my life, coming into the book I was reading. I loved that.
The Love Hypothesis was just everything I remember loving about contemporary books. It was cute, adorable and swoon-worthy. I laughed out loud so many times. Especially when both of the characters were being typical science nerds… i.e. hopeless about anything else. It was such a fun read and as soon as I finished the book, I just wanted to start it all over again. And that never happens to me with contemporary books.
If you’ve been looking at this one but don’t usually read Contemporary so are unsure whether to read it, I urge you… just go ahead and read it. I promise you won’t be disappointed. This was exactly the kind of book I needed to end my 2021 on. It was perfect, and Ali Hazelwood has officially gone on my must-buy author list. I loved every single moment of it.
