How To Get Over A Reading Slump
We’ve all been there… hit the dreaded reading slump and we just can’t seem to find anything to grab your attention. If you’re like me, you dread this because either you’re putting too much pressure on yourself to keep reading, your TBR is so overflowing you can’t afford to not be reading, or you have too many arcs on a tight schedule you definitely don’t have time to not be reading. Well… here are my ways to get over a reading slump
1. Put the ARCs down and just read something you want to read!
I know the feeling all too well, having accepted too many ARCs, they’re on a tight schedule and you just don’t want to read them right now. I actually only request books I am DYING for now because I don’t want reading to feel like a job! So if I’m in a slump due to ARCs I tend to pick something off my shelf that I am genuinely excited to read, not a book I’m reading because I have to.
2. Re-read A Favourite
This is my go-to advice for any reading slump. I know, I know, you’re TBR is enormous you can’t afford to spend time re-reading.. I tell myself this too. But sometimes all you need is to sit down and relax in a world you know, with characters that feel like old friends. My go-to for this one is Obsidian by JLA. I first read it way back in 2011 and I still love every single word of that book!
3. Try A Different Genre
This one always works for me. I tend to just read one genre constantly until I’ve sickened myself of it. That’s when I need a switch. Usually something I don’t read all that often. For me, it’s usually a contemporary romance book as I’m usually a paranormal/fantasy reader. It works for me every time.
4. Just Take A Break From Reading
I know what you’re thinking… ‘Is she crazy?!’ But I mean it. Sometimes we need a break from our first love. It doesn’t have to be a long break. Take a week off to watch that show you’ve been meaning to watch, or do that puzzle that’s sat on your table. You’ll appreciate those books when you’re back… and they’re not going anywhere. They’ll still be there when you’re ready.
And remember… reading is for fun. It’s not a race, it’s not a competition. Just do what makes you happy!
