5 Standalones I Have Loved
As I’m having a standalone themed month in September, I thought now would be a perfect time to reflect back on the standalone’s I’ve read in the past and share them with you. It was actually quite difficult to find these as I am such a serial reader, but I did it! Here are five of my all time favourite standalones.
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold was one of the very first full novels I read. I must have been about 9 or 10 (if you’re read it you’ll know there’s a questionable scene for a child of that age but oh well) and I just loved it. It is one of the most heartbreaking and moving books I’ve ever read. It will always remain one of my favourites for that reason.
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro is very different from my usual reads. I read this just before the movie came out and I loved it. It’s very historical with a dash of some subtle sci-fi elements. It’s a very thought provoking read and really centres around this question of what is it to be a human. I loved it and it’s one I would very much re-read in the future.
Don’t Look Back by Jennifer L Armentrout was my very first thriller. Before reading this I never would have considered reading a thriller, now they’re one of my favourite genres. This is such a fantastic intro to YA thrillers and a must-read for everyone.
Trouble by Non Pratt is a very raw and real look into teenage pregnancy. I loved this one because it doesn’t romanticise it at all, and explores the idea of losing all your friends because of it. It was such a wonderful read.
The Flat Share by Beth O’Leary is one of my all time favourite contemporary romance reads. It is heartwarming, and pure… and just so very cute. I recommend this one to every romance lover. But beware if you’re not from the UK, the accent it’s ‘wrote’ in could be confusing.
What are your favourite standalones?

Most of the books I’ve read are a series*, trilogy, or duology. But I enjoyed The Watchers by Dean Koontz.
* one series was over 20 books!
