Unleashed, the romantic, high-stakes sequel to New York Times bestselling author Sophie Jordan’s Uninvited, is perfect for fans of James Patterson’s Confessions of a Murder Suspect.Davy has spent the last few months trying to come to terms with the fact that she tested positive for the kill gene HTS (also known as Homicidal Tendency Syndrome). She swore she would not let it change her, and that her DNA did not define her . . . but then she killed a man.
Now on the run, Davy must decide whether she’ll be ruled by the kill gene or if she’ll follow her heart and fight for her right to live free. But with her own potential for violence lying right beneath the surface, Davy doesn’t even know if she can trust herself.
“Just because we are carriers doesn’t mean that we have to live without conscience. The minute we forget that, the minute it’s every man for himself… then all is lost. We’ve become the monsters they say we are.”
Uninvited, the first series in this series, is a book I read around 7 years ago and I absolutely loved it. I had read Sophie Jordan’s previous books and loved them so much, so I picked this series up. The second book wasn’t out at the time, and as is the story of my life, by the time it released I was distracted with other books and just never picked up the second book. I finally picked this one up as part of my series challenge this year… and I was left feeling quite deflated and disappointed. I remember loving the first book and I just wish I’d enjoyed the ending of the duology as much.
This series has such a fantastic premise: What would happen if we could screen people to see if they have the ‘killer’ gene. As a Psychology teacher with an interest in Forensic Psychology, I loved this idea and concept. It’s an amazing premise, but unfortunately the execution of the ending of this story just didn’t live up to my expectations. I kind of feel like this would have been better as a standalone. The plot wasn’t strong enough for me to feel like this book was necessary. I feel like a lot of it could have been combined into a nice little epilogue on the first book.
The main focus of Unleashed was the romance. And usually, I’d be cool with that but the endgame romance? I just didn’t feel it. I was just kind of left deflated thinking really? I had absolutely no feelings at all towards her endgame love interest and was left feeling heartbroken for my beautiful baby Sean. I adored him in the first book and I feel like Sophie utterly did him dirty.
I am glad I finally finished this series and got to see how it ended, but unfortunately this one just wasn’t for me. I wouldn’t re-read this book and if love stories mean everything to you… I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this one.
“Things happen. Things that you think you’ll never get over. But you do. You move on. It gets better with time. You forget. Forgive. Whatever. Life goes on and you go on with it.”
