From Goodreads:
In the beginning, there was darkness.
Before he met Callie, before he became the Bargainer, there was Desmond Flynn, the bastard son of a scribe. A boy born to a weak mother, cursed with little magic, and destined to marry a slave.

But fate had something else in mind.

Till darkness dies.
From the barren caves of Arestys to the palace of Somnia to the streets of earth, this is how Desmond Flynn, a fairy who began with nothing, became the Emperor of Evening Stars.

“How do you fight the darkness? You refuse to let it snuff out your light.”

After devouring the first two books in The Bargainer Series, I couldn’t wait to dive into The Emperor of Evening Stars. In the first two books I fell head over heels in love with Des and the thought of this novella being his back story… I was sold. I liked this novella. It was enjoyable but it was way way longer than I thought it needed to be.

The first half of The Emperor of Evening Stars was perfect. I absolutely loved seeing young Des and how he became the person we know and love from the previous books. I really loved seeing his past with his mother and what happened to her. The first half of this novella really filled in some gaps and answered some questions about Des that I had from the past books.

My issue with this novella came in the second half. I just got a bit bored after he met Callie. I just felt like I knew so much of it and it was just rehashing what I already knew. I know people will have loved this but it’s not something that I enjoy. I’m not really a fan of books where authors do the same book but from another’s perspective. I’m always like… I’ve already read this story, I don’t need this. That’s exactly how I felt in the second half and I ended up skim reading it.

I’m glad I read The Emperor of Evening Stars and it’s definitely worth reading if you love Des and want to see his back story. If you love books from the other character’s perspective you will also love this. I enjoyed it, I’m glad I read it but it was just longer than I felt it needed to be.

“I’ll cherish her, respect her, love her. For all the days of her mortal life, I’ll claim her as mine.”
