My 5 Favourite Musicals… As Books
If you’ve followed me here, or on social media for any amount of time you’ll already know my absolute obsession with musicals. Other than books, and reading, my favourite thing in the world is going to the theatre to see a good musical! After reading some books that I felt linked quite well with some of my favourites, I finally decided to combine these two loves of mine into one post.
1. Heathers The Musical ……

The first musical I had to include was Heathers. I was a huge lover of the old 80s movie and then when I saw Heathers in the West End in 2018 I just fell head over heels in love with it. It’s hilarious and perfect for people with dark humour. This isn’t necessarily a new book that I’ve read… I actually read it years and years ago but Pretty Little Liars was the first book that popped in my head to match with Heathers. Both have a group of mean girls and both are kinda dark. It was the perfect fit for me.
2. Kinky Boots ……

Kinky Boots is one of my all time favourite musicals. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing this one three times and the soundtrack is a staple in my car. It’s just amazing, uplifting and feel good… much like new book Boy Queen by George Lester. Now, I’m not usually a big lover of contemporary books but I had to pick this one up because I have this insane love of all things drag! Like Kinky Boots, Boy Queen is an uplifting tale of accepting who you are! It’s uplifting and heartwarming and the perfect fit!
3. We Will Rock You ……

We Will Rock You is a recent favourite musical of mine. I’m a huge Queen fan so when I got the chance to see it I fell in love with it. It’s a dystopia story, and I am a huge, huge lover of dystopia storylines. Because of that addictive dystopia plot, I have matched it with Divergent. I remember being totally obsessed and in love with Divergent back when it first came out… I may not have been with the other two books in the series but I feel like Divergent is a good fit.
4. Hamilton ……

Hamilton is a recent obsession of mine. I was supposed to go and see it live this year… and well… we all know how that went! But the Hamilton gods smiled down on us all by adding it onto Disney+. I have now watched it about 10 times and I am constantly listening to the soundtrack in my car… I am definitely obsessed. I feel like Outlander is a great fit for this one as they are both historical and tell the stories of real events within them. I haven’t actually read the whole series of Outlander but it’s definitely on my to-read list.
5. Wicked ……

Wicked is my oldest love in terms of musicals. It was the first West End show I ever saw and it started my obsession for musicals. I’ve seen it about 6 times so it definitely needed to be included. I matched Wicked with Heartless as they both tell the unknown story of the “villain”. Wicked tells the story of the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz; Heartless tells the story of the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland. I love books/stories like these. I love a good villain backstory!
So there you have it, my five favourite musicals as books! Are you a book and musicals lover? What books would you match with your favourites?
